Ripley (2024)
A refined and sinister Kaurismäki like production
The silences are so effective, like a Aki Kaurismäki directed production. The difference being this is even more refined and stylish. The black and white production has an amazing impact and haunts you after you stop each episode and try to get in with your life. You start to see the World in the same way for a short time after.
The soundtrack is also excellent and adds the right colour to the monochrome. It's available on Spotify.
Andrew Scott capture the role perfectly. Brilliant casting and acting too by all the extended cast. Superb direction and outstanding photography. A perfect production.
Napoleon (2023)
Shockingly bad. Scott's defence of inaccuracy "were you there". Dumb and dumber
Really poor film making, a historical portrait by a person who openly despises historical detail however light. It's not just bad historically it's appalling as a film, the worst effects, the worst dialogue, pretty much the worst spend of production budget and scenography. The first thing that strikes you is a 24 year old that is played by an actor who decidedly in his late fifties. He doesn't age though so that is a historical consolation, accuracy is bound to coincide over some period of the film surely. To no affect though. Regular British TV period dramas do better in a significantly lower budget,
There are many scenes that are almost hysterically funny, the wedding night consummation of Napoleon's marriage to Josephine...cartoon like historical passion!
In Egypt, which was an utter disaster for Napoleon, he snuck away and abandoned his army to return to Paris to try to protect his reputation. It's treated as a touristic sojourn where he is more worried about Josephine's infidelity. Sad and pathetic, I cannot even go on. This is the work of a pretender and as it's Scott it's probably because he has given kilo and is just churning it out..at our cost unfortunately.
The Responder (2022)
Nordic darkness from Englands North
Very dark and deep insight into the pressures of policing Liverpool. Martin Freeman does an excellent job, award winning stuff and he is as authentic as you can be as a Liverpudlian. Only seen first three episodes and so far so good.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Terribly directed start but worth persevering
The opening episode is almost farcical the way so much is packed in. It gets better as the plot lines get embedded and you understand the pressure the director was under when you find out it's only a four part series. Why? Th e producers have risked overall success by trying to rush and condense it, many might not go beyond episode one because I'd it and that would be a shame.
Hvide Sande (2021)
Good acting terrible script and appalling continuity
Good acting but terrible script and appalling continuity and direction. Really poor quality story line and not up to Danish standards.
Tunna blå linjen (2021)
Brilliant
Exceptional direction, screenplay and acting. Pretty much faultless, emotive and somewhat inspiring
