I Feel Pretty (2018)
Do haters meet in secret somewhere and just decide to hate things...?
The hate that this movie is getting is so misplaced in my opinion. I think the satirical element of Renee, the main character, went severely over people's heads- it even went over my head in the beginning. But I caught on.
I laughed out loud frequently. I thought the humor was equal parts clever and dumb (in a good way), if that makes sense. I was caught off guard by this movie, because I had low expectations due to the movie's reception (even though I instinctively KNEW it was mostly haters).
I love Amy Schumer. I loved Trainwreck. I didn't love Snatched. But this movie was wonderful. Not perfect. But wonderful.
Life of the Party (2018)
Haters... Haters Everywhere.
No, this movie was not extraordinary. But dang people have so much hate inside them. It wasn't a strong story, but I laughed out loud a good handful of times. Is it ridiculous? At times dumb? Of course. Can moviegoers get over it? Evidently not. But the movie was neither a waste of time nor money.
I also love a good, crazy Maya Rudolph role.
(People still waiting for a Melissa McCarthy movie to change the course of humanity, you need to move along)
Oculus (2013)
Extremely Surprising, In A Good Way
I normally don't do reviews, but I wanted to add to this one for extra encouragement for readers to watch this. I'm a big supernatural horror fan, and I had heard that this movie was different- how different it actually is, I never would have expected!
I won't give anything away, but I will tell you this: The way the story is told is so so so golden. It takes a high level of attention to follow and is just brilliant. The viewer becomes just as frustrated as the characters as you discover how IMPOSSIBLE it is to distinguish reality from the ghostly hallucinations. It's frightening to put yourself in their shoes and imagine that you might be doing something completely different from what you think you're doing. So intense!
It's definitely worth the watch, even if you do not find the apparitions frightening- sometimes I thought the terror aspect of the movie was cheesy, but the story line is good enough alone.
