Iron Man (2008)
Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man
Okay, it's a super hero comic book turned movie, so to suspend your disbelieve is a requirement rather than a suggestion. Still, on my third viewing I couldn't ignore the plot holes any longer. I stopped counting after half an hour when it felt that EVERY scene led to a new question mark in my mind (the miracle of Tony Stark who seems to be an iron man even without the suit is just one). And still I love this movie. It's fun, it has the typical super hero mentality (and I loved the comic books), it's flashy and gaudy, has good pacing, a soundtrack that appeals to me, and... it has Robert Downey Jr. The best 3 seconds of the movie are when, during the first test-flight, he has a near miss with the freeway and laughs out in glee. Tony Stark is a crazy fearless genius who celebrates challenge - and life. After Downey's performance, I can't imagine anyone else playing that role. So, suspend your disbelieve on all levels, and enjoy RDJ!
Jersey Girl (2004)
Not for the Jay and Silent Bob fans
I had some time recently and watched most of Kevin Smith movies, with the exception of clerks, which I saw about 10 years ago. In terms of art or originality this is certainly not his number one achiever. But this is generally not what draws me to movies, so I could thoroughly enjoy this piece as what it was, a very touching and emotional statement that one should choose love over money and family over fame. Of course this is not new, but I buy it here. The fact that I assume it reflects what Mr. Smith experienced in recent years spices the overall impression but in the end is not really necessary. Maybe this is a chick flick but since it was a Kevin Smith movie it attracts the wrong audience?
One sentence about Ben Affleck (I will mention the awesome Live Tyler just in these brackets): Maybe he is a bad actor, but I think not in this movie. Most of the time I think people that are accused of bad acting in the IMDb failed to be believable for one reason or another. This for me was not the case here. Will Smith was a nice bonus. Overall very likable and spirit-lifting movie.
Huff (2004)
One of a rare breed, and probably soon cancelled
So far I have not seen all the episode of season one, but I am sufficiently impressed by the story, the actors and the overall setting to give my opinion.
First of all I love the opening credits, very compelling. The story about a psychiatrist who himself could be diagnosed as having vivid hallucinations, struggling to find a balance between reaching out helping people and remain sane and keep that needed amount of self-preservation, self-esteem and self-centeredness one needs not to loose oneself (I think I relate because I am a physician too) is to me unknown so far in American TV shows, especially since it is not centered around piety. Also I really think the relationships for the most part are written and portrayed very human and believable, I like most of the characters. Huffs mother, wife and brother are very well written. Oliver Platt got a really good role where you cannot decide if you hate or love him (especially after ep 5) . I cannot relate to the son, he is too weak, too understanding for his age, but maybe it's the actor, the voice is very soft-spoken, I don't know any teenagers that act that way. The humor is good, I find the patients that are shown very believable, and it is shown that psychotherapy cannot cure everything - but sometimes it does. And that's true. I have seen many movies and shows where realism and credibility are third or not in consideration at all anymore, and that's alright if the y achieve to entertain us. It is refreshing for me to see that there are still some attempts to create an intelligent, humorous and credible show to entertain us and maybe get a little more tolerance towards our fellow people. Too sad that I fear I am one of few, at least not enough to let this show last very long. Might as well enjoy the ride as long as it lasts. 10/10
Hitch (2005)
Delivers
Don't get me wrong, I saw the movie and I liked it, because it was meant to be liked and this worked: Beautiful and likable leads and supporting actors, very romantic message, some comedy, quite a good script.
TADA! Here the critique: 1. We hear Alex was just dating girls without committing. So how did that work? Was he all honest and told them he wanted to have sex and not a serious relationship? Or was he just like Vance? 2. Sarah never had a serious relationship, because of her sister. Yeah right. And here is the dilemma - these confident beautiful people are cast to deal with everyday problems. I don't mind that in the end it's "boy gets girl", and I know nobody would see these movies if they would cast nobodies so right now I don't know how to resolve this. But because of the aforementioned to inconsistencies my rating was 7.
