Gravitation (1999)
One of my all time favorites
Sweet, silly, heart-wrenching. It's like a soap opera with an ending. Sort of. This will only appeal to you if you feel intensely and can picture yourself in the Yuki-Shuichi dynamic. This is a story about melancholy love and what happens around it. It's not "deep" but it might make you feel for Shuichi and Yuki. If you have a fantasy world and a guy like Shuichi or Yuki is the star if it, you will like this movie. Shuichi is sweet, innocent, eager to please, dynamic, almost bipolar, and f-ing adorable. Yuki is cruel, uptight, closed off, demeaning, and yet cares deeply for Shuichi and (hopefully) mistreats Shuichi only because that is the only way he has learned to cope with the world and everyone in it. Sure they are both unhealthy and crazy, but at least they are crazy for each other. 10/10 for the way it makes me feel.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
A landmark train wreck of a film
First off, this a very slow movie. Don't mistake a slow pace for art. Although it starts off very intriguing, the movie is a train wreck towards the end. It makes no sense, and yet it is praised for being visionary exactly because it makes no sense. It undermines the achievements of mankind and attributes them to a vastly superior species. Humans are depicted as boring, sterile, pitiable creatures with no souls. HAL on the other hand is more human than any actual human on screen, albeit misguided. If you cut out the monolithic black rectangles and everything after HAL is deactivated, you would be left with a decent movie, but as whole the movie only satisfies the "artists" who can't explain why it is a good movie, it "just is". Call me crazy, but I don't find a film that mocks humanity tasteful or entertaining. All in all, you will probably like this if you like the Rocky Horror Picture Show. For everyone else, it's OK to watch once so you are familiar with a landmark film, regardless of if it deserves to be or not.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Zeppelins and giant robots
This isn't a masterpiece, but it has a special place in my mind. The plot is simple and even tired, but that doesn't stop it from working its charm. I think this could easily be a classic comic book series. It has a slightly noire feel and if you want a lighthearted action movie that isn't in your face, you should see it. Zeppelins, giant robots, fighter planes, a mysterious mad scientist, a reporter on her latest scoop- can you think of a better stew? This movie could easily be expanded into its own universe like Star Wars. Unfortunately and perhaps for the best, it hasn't become a hit- the sequel is never as good as the original. All-in-all, it's a fun ride. If you liked the it's-so-bad-it's-good Fifth Element, you will probably enjoy this.
