Rapture (2019)
Sci-fi or Christian? Well, neither.
I was hesitant at first just from the title "Rapture" but I enjoy "mystical" stories and films no matter the religion. It's nicer when they are close to their source, be it the Qur'an, Christian bible, or Bhagavad Gita.
This movie has some positive notes, like the mystical "robed figures" whom you couldn't look at for more than a couple seconds. But no Christian I've ever known would have had the repentent struck down by either lightning or plague - it ruins the credibility of the "faithful."
* SPOILERS *
It kept my interest until they had to get a "conversion in the face of desperation" scene in there. I almost abandoned watching, but then I held out hope for a nice mystical/religious ending. Didn't happen.
I agree with the other reviewer who suggested that it should have been left as an alien invasion with little hope. Perhaps there could have been at least a glimmer of hope at the end...?
Doom: Annihilation (2019)
Excellent (Compass) Direction; Only 25% of a Story
First, by "direction," I mean where it was headed, like a compass direction. Unlike the attempt with Dwayne Johnson and Karl Urban where the monsters were a genetic "oops" (why?!?), this attempt AT LEAST had the decency to make the monsters as ALL the Doom games made abundantly clear: they're demons. Period. This alone made watching it worth the gamble.
That being said, the whole movie left me wanting more. Lots more, like enough of a story to even follow. This was more like an episode of a 10-part miniseries: I'd missed the introductory episode, and what was shown were pieces of episodes 2, 4, and 7.
There weren't nearly enough demons, and I had so hoped to see the many types that should have been created. Rather disappointed in that.
Personally, I thought the visuals were nicely done: the few monsters I saw where fierce, powerful, scary, and rather believable. The humans-turned-zombies were nice, too. Not overdone at all.
I'd have liked to have seen more weapons (plasma rifle, rocket launcher, etc.), but the movie was far too short to have the opportunity for their introduction and use. To be fair, if they had been present, I'm sure the criticism would have been that too many items were being jammed into the timeframe. I'd have agreed. I also wish the BFG would have made a more familiar sound, though realistically, military weapons shouldn't make a big light/sound show if there isn't any tactical reason to do so.
The acting was weak, though Dr Betruger wasn't too bad.
All in all, I think it's worth a watch, but not what I paid to own it, especially since there were NO special features AT ALL. Not even the inclusion of a lousy trailer!
