I had read reviews of this in the past and I knew that it wouldn't be great, but I decided to buy a copy off ebay for a laugh.
When watching it i began to get quite bored at the start, I didn't really care to much of the car crash and the depression that resulted after that. When Malus arrived on the island things slowly began to pick up, but when the people on the island began talking to him I knew they wouldn't be as sinister or interesting as in the original. When Malus entered the Tavern I thought to myself how dull and when he got talking to Willow I though oooooooo something exciting, wrong!!! Eventually as we all know Malus meets Sister Summersisle and a similar conversation to the original (however not as fascinating)results.
However by the end of the film I was quite keen to see how the precession would be handled. Besides the fact that Sister Summersisle looked like brave heart and also that the villagers were not really into what was happening, I knew to expect little. At the conclusion when Malus pulled his gun I thought how cliché and crap we all knew it would be empty and the stinging of the bees, rubbish.
I actually watched the unrated and the released version and I felt that the released versions ending was crap. I believe in the movie as like the original the bees and honey failed so thats why they had to sacrifice Malus to bring the bees and honey back to life, and burning him in the Wicker Man would solve their problems as it would please the Gods, however at the end Willow and a friend are picking up new victims obviously for their next sacrifice, which in a way discounts the whole notion of the movie on Pagan rituals, that a sacrifice will make the crops thrive, so I found that utterly stupid.
When comparing this to the original, the actors in this were terrible especially Burnstyn, Cage and the one who played Willow as she seemed very indecisive about everything. The music was unoriginal compared to the original, nothing was explained very well in the remake, like their way of life, and the ideas of the animal costumes and going deep into their religion and its beliefs. I also didn't like the slight hints at rip off from other films ie don't look now (the girl in the red dress leading the man to his death) and village of the dammed (most of the kids in bland clothes and with blonde hair).
Overall I was disappointed I think if I hadn't seen the original I might have given it 5 out of 10, but as their were little shocks and little interest for all involved, only watch if you have time to kill.
