The Walking Dead: Coda (2014)
Thank god that's over
Slabtown, wow that could have been handled so differently. It could have been dramatic. It could have had real conflict you cared about. It could have been about different tribes collaborating. Coda was the finale to that plot line and with it, the death of Beth.
Poor Beth, i can just imagine the conversations taking place in the producer meetings. She must have been registering so low on the "like i care" viewer polling that her death was inevitable. Emily Kinney was given more than her fair share of opportunities to shine and well, she did not. (BTW, did anyone else find those stitched wounds on her face annoyingly distracting?) But this episode's lameness didn't land completely at the feet of Kinney: the idiot priest (and yet again, another injured foot), weak dialogue and some seriously wooden delivery all gave Coda the "Weakest Episode of the Season" award.
The battle with the cannibals ended too soon. The 'conflict'(?) with the Slabtown people stretched out way too long, and with nothing actually to cliff-hang off, I think this will be the first Christmas in years where I think little about the Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead: Slabtown (2014)
>Yawn<
The group just put down a bunch of cannibals like the wild dogs that they were... So now we are introduced to a group of creepy cops? Who cares?! I don't care about the cops, the doctor or Beth. Sorry.
The intern who escaped at the end of the episode was the most interesting new character of the lot. Oh and btw, if i see another person fall and twist their ankle, I am going to scream. I think that one was done to death, in the 2nd Friday the 13th movie 30 years ago.
The most I see this amounting to is Rick 'n crew come to the rescue, there is a shoot-out, the rescue happens. Rick 'n crew prevail.
Like I said before... >yawn<
The Walking Dead: Still (2014)
Yawn...
This episode is a great example of presenting characters I don't care that much about. There are moments when it was downright boring. The ability to develop character is important, but what we learned should NOT have taken an entire episode.
I suppose Darryl is a heart throb which makes him a popular character on TWD to some, but he's at his best interacting in a group. This was a filler episode... and frankly, the trailer for the upcoming episode with Maggy and those other two isn't encouraging. I hope they toggle between groups because two boring episodes in a row is enough to start this series to unravel.
The Walking Dead: Claimed (2014)
Claimed - the best episode this season
Season four of Walking Dead has been the bumpiest yet. The first half of the the season with so many people at the prison and with the Governor's narrative still playing out, was a real effort to stay tuned in. The entire idea of the large community was not working for me. Of course, there were plenty of nameless people who died off from disease and zombie attacks, but the finale with the death of the Governor was (not only logic-defying but) a tremendous sense of relief.
Episodes After (S4E9) and Inmates (S4E10) of the second half of season four, has also been a bit bumpy. This is mainly because I simply don't care for or about some of the characters they've chosen to focus on. It can be a bit frustrating watching how the producers are working so hard to target the widest range of demographics. The more targeted groups who can relate to the characters, the larger the Walking Dead's audience. But at times, it seems too much.
This latest episode: Claimed (S4E11) has brought us back to the beginning with our main character Rick surviving against odds and foes, with a lots of tension; while we learn more about Michonne. As well, it is good to see Glen (another original character) back on his feet and showing himself to be capable.
The blend of new characters, plot lines and the follow of our favourite characters has set us on a couple new and interesting trajectories. Is there truth in these new claims? Claimed is definitely the episode that has me keenest for what is going to happen next. And for the first time this season, I am not expecting more of the same.
Rating 9/10.
The Walking Dead: Live Bait (2013)
The Governor's story is a great addition
I noticed a few critics complaining about this storyline, however I don't share their criticism. Actually, I think getting us caught up with the Governor, is a fresh distraction from all the blood-foamy coughing the prison dwellers have been painting the walls with.
The effort to present the Governor less like a cartoon villain and more like a ravaged soul is noted with credit. However, there were a bit too much shuffling scenes at the beginning of the episode. It is great to see there are more people out there beyond the prison, who are existing amongst the zombie herds. Sometimes, it seems the prison population are the only breathing people left, so bring on the Governor. There is nothing wrong with having parallel narratives. (This is a show about The Walking Dead, not the Rick & crew show).
I have to deduct points off this episode for: A. Taking a vehicle that doesn't start. B. The ol' "twisted ankle" routine. C. The make-out scene inches from a child (who would surely wake up).
I look forward to seeing more of the Governor, more about life in this post-apocalypse zombie world - outside the prison and maybe another hero or two (who isn't a crossbow wielding rock star).
