Paranormal Activity (film series)

Public
Using its low-budget effects and mockumentary method to great result, Paranormal Activity turns a simple haunted house story into 90 minutes of relentless suspense.
"You cannot run from this - it will follow you."
Paranormal Activity (2009) began as a small independent found footage horror movie with aspirations of a grander franchise. The initial film changed cinema history, becoming one of the most profitable ever made. What would later follow is a film series of winding, interconnected timelines spanning several decades and generations of families. While the films weren’t released in chronological order, time travel sequences used as plot devices in later entries become more rewarding for those who have followed each previous movie with a close eye. Though Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum is looking to end the franchise, an eighth film is set to come out in 2023, which will no doubt expand the timeline in new directions. We’ve compiled a guide to the major events within the Paranormal Activity timeline so far in chronological order.

The Alien(s) Universe

The Alien movies in order represent a long and complicated timeline that has managed to keep audiences entertained for over 40 years.
Created by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, Alien is a horror-in-space tale, inspired by the works of artist H.R. Giger and the sci-fi films of earlier eras.
Ridley Scott was the first director to set the tone and style for the series, and he helped bring O'Bannon and Shusett's vision to life in a way that launched a global franchise, spawning multiple films, books, games, merchandise, and more.
The titular "alien" of the series, known as the Xenomorph, has since become a staple of the sci-fi horror genre.
The first sequel, Aliens, took the franchise in an action-packed direction under director James Cameron, and that trend would continue through Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection in the '90s. After battling their interstellar rivals in two Alien vs. Predator films, the franchise explored the Xenomorph's origins in the divisive film Prometheus, with Ridley Scott returning to direct. Alien: Covenant returned the series to its roots in a film that was similar to the first Alien movie, but it was met with little fanfare. While not much is known about it, Fede Álvarez's new Alien movie aims to reboot the franchise and continue its legacy for a new generation. The release order for the Alien movies is broken into three quadrants that are relatively easy to follow. The first four films, Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection follows a straight-line narrative that centers on Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) within the world of the Xenomorphs. The following two entries in the series are the Alien vs. Predator films, AVP and AVP: Requiem, which breaks away from the story of the first Alien movie, taking place in the present day, many decades before Ripley. The last section of the Alien movies in release order is the two prequel films, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which explore the origins of the Xenomorph.

AVP: Alien Vs. Predator (2004) Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) Prometheus (2012) Alien: Covenant (2017) Alien (1979) Aliens (1986) Alien 3 (1992) Alien: Resurrection (1997)
For those wanting to watch the Alien films in chronological order, the roster is a bit tricky, as the films shuffle around quite a bit. Oddly enough, the AVP films are the earliest when taking the Alien movies in order, as they take place well before the events of Prometheus or even Alien. Starting off at the dawn of human civilization, AVP explains how Predators used Earth as a hunting ground for Xenomorphs, with its sequel leading all the way up to the present day (21st Century).
Prometheus takes place roughly 80 years after AVP: Requiem, explaining the origin of the Xenomorphs and the Engineers who created them. Alien: Covenant continues the origin story, taking place in 2104, leading to the first Alien movie. Alien takes place two decades after Alien: Covenant and begins the journey of Ellen Ripley, the main protagonist of the series. Ripley is in stasis for 57 years between Alien and Aliens, taking the franchise to the year 2179, which is also when Alien 3 takes place. The last film chronologically, Alien Resurrection, takes place in 2318, roughly 200 years after Alien 3 when Ripley is brought back as a clone.

The Exorcist is an American media franchise that originated with William Peter Blatty's 1971 horror novel of the same name (itself inspired by the 1949 exorcism of Roland Doe) and most prominently featured in a 1973 film adaptation of the novel, and many subsequent prequels and sequels. All of these installments focus on fictional accounts of people possessed by Pazuzu, the main antagonist of the series, and the efforts of religious authorities to counter this possession.
The Exorcist was based on the novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. Several subsequent prequels and sequels have since kept this franchise one of the most popular ever made. All the installments are based loosely on actual events, centering on accounts of people possessed by mysterious supernatural entities and the struggle between good and evil; there are even behind-the-scenes Exorcist facts which suggest that the productions seemed practically haunted.
In The Exorcist films, we watch as family, detectives, and priests battle with supernatural demons. For fans of horror and classic jump scares, we can't deny that even the original leaves a spine-chilling sensation in the room. Predator is one of the most iconic movie franchises of all time, with an equally iconic monster. An alien hunter who uses a series of advanced weapons to hunt down humans for sport has captivated viewers' imaginations since 1987. The character has been featured in various forms of other media from comics, video games, and crossover series, and audiences can't get enough of the Predator.
Throughout the years, the creature has taken on many mantles, from a scary extraterrestrial movie monster to an antihero, an honorable warrior to a full-blown alien invader, and audiences still keep coming back as the most recent entry Prey was released on Hulu to strong reviews from critics and fans.
Updated October 24th, 2022: This article has been updated to reflect the new information the Predator franchise revealed in the film Prey.
In a franchise that spans seven films (and a rich mythology in comic books), the Predator movies explore a world where humanity comes face to face with a creature more technologically advanced than them, and they must fight to survive it. Yet instead of a massive alien invasion, these conflicts are smaller-scale, more intimate, and more frightening, where humanity is often outgunned. The human spirit keeps going in the face of impossible odds to make humanity a worthy competitor in the universe. Take a look at the Predator movies in chronological order, and order of release, depending on one's viewing pleasure.

The Conjuring Universe is an American horror franchise and shared universe centered on a series of supernatural horror films. The franchise is produced by New Line Cinema, the Safran Company, and Atomic Monster, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The films present a dramatization of the supposed real-life adventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent yet controversial cases of haunting. The main series follows their attempts to assist people who find themselves harassed by spirits, while the spin-off films focus on the origins of some of the entities the Warrens have encountered.
Edward Warren “Ed” was born September 7, 1926. Lorraine Warren was born on January 31, 1927. They married in 1945 and had their daughter Judy in 1950. Ed was an author, lecturer, and self-taught demonologist. Lorraine was a medium and a clairvoyant.
The Warrens were known for investigating paranormal haunting and incidents such as the Amityville Haunting case in New York. They also had The Warrens Occult Museum that housed many artifacts from cases they investigated, including Annabelle, the possessed Raggedy Ann doll. Of course, many were skeptical about what The Warrens say they did and saw, but that is for you to decide whether or not you believe.
