The Lunch Date (1989)
What should we do for not becoming selfish?
An elderly woman whose pride takes a dent is able to learn an essential thing.
If I were to meet this woman before she experiences the event, I think I would not be able to stand her, because she thinks she is a great person and she never chooses the wrong way. We can see such people on the street often. They always deny their fault and attribute their responsibility onto others when they make a mistake. If they continue this tendency without reflecting on their conduct, they can learn nothing from experience. They lose out not only for us but for themselves.
However, she changes completely. If she didn't miss the train, she wouldn't use the restaurant. So, she must thank the man who bumped into her. It is often said that children get selfish if the parents bring up the children with great care. I believe I am not like her and my children, who will be born someday in the future, also will not grow up spoiled. Therefore, I decide strongly that I always will not give them everything that they want.
Knick Knack (1989)
I grasped why many people love Pixar's film
All films Pixar made are so wonderful, and this film is also great. What is the good points common among such animations? The main character tries many times to overcome some difficulties, or fulfill what he wants. Then, he almost achieves it. In this film, however, other barrier come up, and he can't realize it. Maybe because his wish is not a good one, not pure, he fails in the mission. This film is very short, so the end is not good for the main character. However, we can learn that nothing gains when we wish so much. Thus, we can learn some lessons from Pixar's films. Especially, in the series of "Toy Story," Woody finally has his wish come true. Toy Story tells us that we are always rewarded if we never give up. Also, Knick Knack tells us that if we approach a woman with hidden motives we always fail. And Knick Knack tells this cheerfully. The sound leads us as if we were in the south land. The main character is gets in the mood, but he fumbles in his intrigue. We can learn from this film that we shouldn't be tempted by the mood.
Balance (1989)
Horrifying but interesting
This film has two good points. One is the music, and another is that they use the dolls.
First, it's about music. I remember strange music like a heartbeat is playing at the opening. What does it mean? I think it symbolizes what happens in a short time. The director may wish that those who watch it concentrate on this and get thrilled by it. In addition to this point, the music usually doesn't come to light. This fact helps the film to get somehow strange. Thus, this music is so impressive.
And, I pay attention to the fact that the director uses the dolls. This is so interesting. He can express by an animation or have some people play. There are many expressive ways. Why does he choose this way? My answer is that the dolls can't play the drama because their faces never change. So, we can imagine what they feel without getting influenced by the director's image.
This film is a little horrifying, but you should watch this and think of it deeply. Then, you can find something new for you.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Japan is facing the modern problem
This film shows two problems. One is about the family, another is about the social terms. First, I can't agree with David's idea. As Keiko says, he should call the police, and ask to look for the boy's relatives. He should not break the boy's family and adopt him. Actually, he is persuaded and he does. It's OK. Then, I imagined the same situation as the story. It's difficult for me to choose Keiko's or David's side. I think David's words "He wouldn't know he isn't us," is wrong; the boy is the boy not the adult, but he is the person. We should respect each other and treat fairly even the child.
Second, the neighbor is somehow strange. Why is she so suspicious? I have two reasons for this.
First, Japanese society is such a crowded society. So, Japanese needs to build good relationships with the neighbors whenever it is. These days, the links get shallow. In previous days, people would sometimes give some spices, and be given them each other between neighbors. From this, people helped each other to live in the old days. Nowadays it sounds odd. We don't trust each other today.
Then, what is the reason we don't trust? The answer is that Japanese society gets dangerous. Japan was said to be the safe country. Since the end of the period of rapid economic growth, more crime is occurred. Danger summons distrust. So, reducing the crime is the fastest way to rebuild the close relationships.
Japan, our country, is facing these very sensitive problems. They are so difficult to solve. We should take a long time for them.
Lifted (2006)
Recommend for a baby education
We can find out an ideal relationship between senior and junior in this film. The junior alien fails many times and the boy is treated terribly. However, the senior never teaches the junior how to do it. We tend to be willing to teach what we know and the partner doesn't know when we notice that we have more knowledge than the partner. But, the senior doesn't teach and he remains calm so that the junior can't find the hint when the junior is at a loss. He want the junior to find the answer by himself. He knows that it is the best way to learn. There is a proverb"Spare the rod and spoil the child." He seems to obey this lesson loyally. And, he is not only strict but also gentle. He gives both carrot and stick. The junior loses the enthusiasm to continue controlling a little before getting the stick, but it brings back the enthusiasm to the junior. Thus, one lesson is shown on the film. While, this is the SF comedy which follows the royal road. The story goes on rhythmically. Moreover, there is a funny pay-off. So, even those who can't understand English like a baby, they can enjoy the film and learn the lesson. I can recommend the parents to let the children watch this.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
The logical comedy
On the story of this film, first, the man went to work rowing the boat alone. Second, he was fascinated by a woman's beauty, and he takes her on the boat. Third, she brought her friend who was so fat. He took them against his will. Forth, they brought their friends. He took them against his will again. He hit upon a good idea to escape them and go to work. It's to swim!!! When he arrives at the harbor he always dropped the anchor, he took fish out of his swimsuit and gave it to the woman who kept watching him arriving while fishing at the harbor.
This story is very logical, that is it, has a satisfying pay-off. I didn't know the meaning of the title until I watched this to the end. However, I found out when the man gave a fish to the woman. All people can enjoy this film regardless of their language because of this simple logic.
Paperman (2012)
The meaning of in black-and-white
This is a story of the man who loves a woman. He fell in love with the woman on the platform. He found that she worked at the building next to the one he works in. Then, he throws many and many airplanes to tell her his love. He failed many times; finally, his love may have been realized. The airplanes led them. They met at the same platform again.
This film was created a few years ago, and was created in black-and-white. These days some films are made by the same way. However, we rarely see this way. I think this way stresses his simple love. Simplicity is more important than complexity in making films. This way requires film makers high technique and is difficult to make, but, this way may move many people's minds .
Father and Daughter (2000)
Impressed by great harmony and story
At the beginning of this story, the daughter sees her father rowing the boat. And, the story went on following the daughter. She was a child at the first scene. She grew up and grew up. Every time the scene changed, she visited the shore which she just saw the father leaving. What did she feel? We cannot know what she felt. But, we can think what she felt. The music helps us. It expresses not only sorrow of the daughter. When she grew up, the piano and the accordion were played at a bit high speed. I feel something sad and nostalgic. I love this harmony. We live in a digital age, and somehow forget parent-child ties. We should watch this film and think about our family.
