Things make sense in a western film. Sometimes because they’re simple. Sometimes because they’re very humanistically complicated. Sometimes life is simpler in that it’s survival focused - everyone knows the job they must do though it’s usually difficult and the very much Not simple complexity of emotions, relationships, politics, etc are still present. Their world is very small. But also who are these people - western settlers, cowboys people who are braving the new frontier, seek adventure, expand their worlds, are runaways outlaws outcasts.
The aesthetics, landscapes. They’re most always a setting I want to be. My grandparents are from South Dakota so many of the open plain scenes etc feel like home.
The moral justice that’s at the heart of every western is comforting. Even if the bad guys win or the beauty of Unforgiven being the line isn’t so clear - even if so, the ambiguity and complexity of the characters really serves to highlight the morality of the situation.
Ie Rio Bravo - our heroes are 1. an alcoholic, heart broken deputy who is a shell of his former self and feels inadequate and scared because of it. A elderly walter brennan, need I say more 3. a young kid who likes to sing, is just and has courage, but who has no experience at all 4. A sheriff who is doing his damndest to work with what he’s got to make sure the right thing is done but who understand the realities of the situation in which he’s out gunned and propping up these other three.
Then we have the fastest gun alive. Ford is the hero and yet he’s the coward. He caught between that and he (like Peck in the Gunfighter) is caught between what’s the mature thing to do and what’s expected.
Either way everything is clearly laid out and defined. We just get to see the characters bring their humanity to the situation. And I like watching people wade their way through these scenarios and their relationships and wrestle with themselves - it’s very human and actually is able to show how people who do “bad” things or make “poor” decisions aren’t by default bad themselves. It shows that many answers when faced with these choices are not actually inherently the good or bad thing / the right or wrong thing. They’re just what you do when you have to do it. (After dissecting it this way, Tarantino operates much in the same way. And so does David Chase via The Sopranos honestly. Hence my love for both!)
