The Prince of Tides (1991)
Everyone Should See This Movie
This is one of the best movies ever made. Nick Nolte and Barbra Streisand give legendary performances that should not be missed. The acting was so good it looked like a documentary movie that was happening in real life. This is an amazing emotional roller coaster that all movie goers need to see.
All families have ghosts or skeletons in their closets that they must face at some point in their lives. In fact many families are dysfunctional. This movie portrays them perfectly in a realistic story and screenplay that is unforgettable. The emotional impact is immortal. You will find yourself watching it again and again shedding some tears every time.
Take my word for it and see this movie now. You won't be disappointed.
Notes on a Scandal (2006)
Why Was This Movie Made?
When you watch good movies you hardly notice the passage of time. On the other hand bad movies are usually unpleasant experiences that seem to last forever. This movie falls into that bad category like a hand in a glove. Its running time is only 92 minutes but it will feel like you are watching a movie 3+ times longer. The only thing that kept me watching it was looking at my watch every 5 minutes wishing that I would soon see the final credits. At last I finally did but was disappointed about wasting 1.5 hours that could have been used for more entertaining things.
Most reviewers of this film praise the excellent acting and screenplay but I don't know why. There are many breakdowns in this movie. I like Judi Dench but she is too old for her character. Her time has come and gone for roles like this. Despite this, Academy Award voters as recent as 2014 continue voting for her performances anyway. This is obviously the result of most of these voters being too old themselves so they don't know the difference.
Cate Blanchett's overacting can't save a pitiful plot that movie goers have seen over and over again. In fact nothing can save this movie. I suggest saving yourself from the pain of wasting 90 minutes.
RoboCop (2014)
The RoboCop Magic Is Gone
I was very excited to see this movie remake of the classic RoboCop movie series made famous in the 1980s. The director creates a great environment during the first hour. We see RoboCop join the Detroit City Police Department again as the famous half human half robot character so many followers like me have come to love. I couldn't wait to see RoboCop fight and catch the bad guys on the streets again with his famous trademark quotes like "your move creep", "thank you for your cooperation" or "come quietly or there will be trouble".
But one hour in is where this movie seems to fall off a cliff. All of RoboCop's famous quotes have vanished. In fact I didn't hear any of them. I don't think his crime fighting scenes lasted 10 minutes. The longest catch the bad guys scene is filmed in the dark and looks like a video game. Sadly RoboCop's character turns into a backseat puppet sub plot overshadowed by political, media hype and police corruption stories.
On the upside the acting and character development are terrific especially between Gary Oldman and Joel Kinnaman. The special effects are decent, realistic and clearly a big part of the movie budget.
If you are not familiar with or didn't see any of the 3 original RoboCop movies you may like this new 2014 movie remake more than I did. I find the results entertaining but very disappointing.
I say let RoboCop do what he does best. Put him back on the streets again with lots of screen time fighting bad guys. Upholding the law with the street justice he is so famous for is RoboCop's trademark. So please let him have it again if any sequels are made.
Stolen (2012)
Another Disaster
Well Nicholas Cage has done it again. Why is his emotionless and depressing acting style so popular? It is beyond my comprehension. And yet to see movie producers choose him for even more movies is unbelievable.
This is a classic case of popular is not the best and definitely not worth paying for. Why do movie companies continue to pay his high salary demands when he delivers pathetic disappointing movies that tarnish the movie entertainment experience not promote it.
You wonder what could have been if other actors had been chosen to play his roles. This is one movie where this question remains unanswered.
Trespass (2011)
Don't Bother Wating Your Time
Well what can I say. Nicholas Cage has done it again. He drags this movie down like the Titanic. I don't understand why so many people like this actor. I can't stand his acting "skills" including trademark emotionless styles that often lead to anti-entertainment depression and disappointment. You often wonder what could have been if other actors had been in some of his movies.
This movie is no exception. In fact it is painful watching this movie. You wonder what happened to entertainment as the movie unfolds. It is completely lost in a Nicholas Cage cloud that you cannot see through. Nicole Kidman gives a decent performance but it is quickly overshadowed by a dark cloud that never goes away.
This is a classic case of popular is not always the best or worth paying for. My advice here would be to hire more qualified professional actors who at least could make the movie entertainment experience enjoyable.
Premium Rush (2012)
Premium Rush Is Premium Entertainment
Those seeking good old fashioned entertainment should not miss this movie. Joe Levitt has been in many movies recently including the latest Batman sequel, but this may be his best performance to date. His personality and skills match his character performance perfectly. He makes the other supporting cast shine even with the limited acting styles they possess. The chemistry works here which is more than most movies can offer even with very high paid actors.
The movie's bicycle messenger plot is simple but a welcome breath of fresh air. You will enjoy and laugh at the NYPD satire sub plot that includes crooked cops and inefficient police officers who can't do their jobs.
Some reviewers will say that this movie lacks character development. But this isn't the movie's focus so negative acting critic's comments can easily be disregarded.
The soundtrack is also a shining star. The carefully selected music tracks are very noticeable. Unlike most movies, they highlight the action and plot development very effectively.
Overall this is not a movie to miss. I am not a big Joe Levitt fan but this movie will not disappoint any movie entertainment fan looking for good old fashioned entertainment.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)
This Is Good Old Fashioned Movie Entertainment
This is a breath of fresh air for movie entertainment. When you watch this Disney movie you will experience the special atmosphere that makes movies such a magical event.
Of course the good versus evil story line has been included in countless movies. You will find it again in this memorable movie in a joyful and cheerful way. There are many special effects and plot twists that will keep you laughing and entertained throughout this Disney production.
The acting is outstanding. I honestly don't like Nicholas Cage in any movie because of his emotionless performances. But in this movie for some reason he seems to excel with his character development. Jay Baruchel reminds me a young a very talented Christian Slater in the prime of his career. His performance and one liners are hidden jewels in this production that keep you laughing and wanting more.
If you are looking for entertainment and quality Disney has done it again. This is an overlooked movie that should not be missed even if it did not do well at the box office. Do yourself a favor and see this movie. You will not be disappointed.
A Dark Truth (2012)
Excellent Overlooked Movie Not To Be Missed
This is one of the best corporate scandal movies ever made. This time it involves a Canadian company rather than a standard typical stereotype American one.
Worldwide travelers like me will appreciate the international realistic business environment exposure that includes Canada, South Africa and Ecuador. Plot twists and turns do not disappoint. Scenes look very realistic and portray how real life business and living conditions exist in these parts of the world.
The performances are outstanding. Andy Garcia gives perhaps his best acting performance yet in his career. Forest Whitaker is equally as impressive shining again as an actor playing another convincing international role character.
Please do yourself a favor and watch this movie. It entertains and delivers so it should not be missed.
Looper (2012)
The Looper Falls Short Of Expectations
Well what can I say? This is another one of Hollywood's movies where the actors are overpaid compromising the budget and production quality of a movie that could have been.
Let's face it. I am a Bruce Willis fan but he is old and a has been as an action hero. His "Die Hard" legacy is legendary but outdated. He no longer a shoot and ask later hero. In fact this can be confirmed by his recent "Expendables 2" roll where he admitted on screen that he was an ancient artifact.
Joe Levitt is overpaid and somewhat out of place in this movie. He gives a mediocre performance that could have easily been duplicated and improved by a more talented actor. In fact the only bright acting spot in this movie are the performances by Piper Perabo and her son Pierce Gagnon. Gagnon's performance and acting talent reminds me of a young Haley Osment who first became famous in the 1994 movie "Forrest Gump" The movie's story is encouraging but we soon find that it falls well short of it's potential. It seems that many key plot points are borrowed from the 1984 "Terminator" and 1993 "Nowhere To Run" movies. Some special effects and plot twists are introduced but they ultimately cannot save this production doomed from the beginning.
My advise is to steer clear of this movie. There are certainly better Bruce Willis movies to see. Joe Levitt has some talent and may one day become a powerful actor. But this is not his breakthrough movie to remember him for.
