Read this to find out who this is about and what he is accused of doing
8 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film is 20 minutes of interviews with former friends of Warren Christopher Clark, a Texan who travelled to Syria to work for the Islamic State. The documentary is not satisfying because it gives very little information.

He has been a practicing Muslim since high school. He was a lonely kid who didn't fit in. The Muslim kids were nice to him, so he converted to their religion. Over the years that they knew him his views got more and more extreme. His friends didn't know what to make of it. They wondered if he was an FBI agent looking for Muslim extremists. We never learn what he actually did.

The following is what I discerned from news stories. Clark is a 34 year old Muslim convert and former substitute teacher. His parents are veterans and retired teachers. He got a degree in political science from the University of Houston in 2007. Starting in 2011 he made statements on social media expressing support for jihadist and terrorist actions. He taught English in Saudi Arabia from 2012 to 2014. He crossed into Syria from Turkey in June 2015. He was seeking a position teaching English at a university in Mosul, which is occupied by ISIS. U.S.-backed forces captured him in Syria on January 6, 2019 when he was trying to escape ISIS territory.

Clark says he never fought for ISIS and that he was repeatedly detained for refusing to take up arms for them. He appears to accept violence to advance Muslim extremism. He talked in an interview with NBC about witnessing public crucifixions and how "that's just normal life there. This is Islamic society, an Islamic country, so things like that happen." He said it didn't bother him to see the executions because that's what he went there to see. Why he went: "I wanted to go see exactly what the group was about, and what they were doing...I wanted to learn more about the ideology. I'm a political science major, global business minor. I like politics. I like travel, world events."

He was indicted in US federal court in Houston on January 23, 2019 on a charge that he attempted to provide himself as material support to the Islamic State from 2011 to October 2015. If convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine. He pled not guilty. He's awaiting trial.

Part of the problem is that this film was made before Clark was captured, so there wasn't a lot of information to work with. It would have been helpful to have some context about the phenomenon more broadly of Americans traveling to Iraq and Syria to support the Islamic State. A report by George Washington University's Program on Extremism says there have been 250-300.

Inspired by the Stanford Swimmer rape case
21 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Remember the Stanford swimmer who was convicted of sexual assault after witnesses saw him having sex with a passed out woman, and then the judge sentenced him to only 6 months (which resulted in the judge being recalled)? This episode does not recreate that case, but is inspired by was inspired by the underlying crime. Provides a nice opportunity for viewers to have conversations about consent. Plus it has Anthony Edwards of ER fame.

Gamer bros rating low because the truth hurts
15 September 2019
The inspiration for the episode was misogyny in gaming. So the fragile gamer incels came over here en masse and rated the episode with one star. Lol. They doth protest too much, methinks.

Dull and silly; kind of fun to laugh at
7 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This would be a great flick for Mystery Science Theater 3000 to lampoon. Encyclopedia Brown resolution. 80s-TV-movie-quality story-telling and production values. Slow, plodding pace. Somehow the serial killer character comes off as mundane, and not menacing, despite being a serial killer.

Don't put spoilers in episode summary
19 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
For the love of all things holy and good, can you please not put spoilers about who committed the crime in the episode summary? Ironically, you say if I put a spoiler in my review my name will be added to a blacklist and all my future reviews will be discarded and automatically unread. No need for me to give a spoiler because you have already done so: "A rape and murder helps Benson and Stabler crack a case involving a serial rapist and killer from the 1970s. However, one copycat crime remains open when investigation reveals that the crime was committed by a woman." Please remove the spoiler about who the killer is from the episode summary so you don't ruin it for other people. Thank you.

Great acting

One of the L&O golden oldies with one of the best police/DA lineups: Briscoe and Logan doing the detective work and Jack McCoy and Claire Kincaid prosecuting the case.

Anna Holbrook has a supporting role in the episode, which is a real treat because she knocked it out of the park every time she was on L&O or SVU.

Sarah Paulson is also great playing the teen-aged daughter. I recommend watching this episode back to back with the 2010 season 11 episode of SVU called Shadow, where 16 years later Paulson plays another rich daughter.

Warning: Spoilers
PROS: 1) There's a plot twist I didn't see coming. 2) Lt. Van Buren has a nice scene where she gives Milena Govich's character the stink eye for being overly critical of a woman who is a demanding boss. 3) It's always a hoot when you get to see McCoy wearing mom jeans at the end.

CONS: 1) The plot twist isn't well executed--the writers and relevant actors didn't let themselves have any fun with it. 2) Milena Govich's acting is embarrassingly bad. And there is absolutely zero chemistry between her and Jesse L. Martin, who plays the other detective. This kind of wrecks the police investigation part of the story--I found myself greatly relieved when the district attorney's office took over to handle prosecuting the case.

RECOMMENDATION: If you like the theme of a woman in a position of authority who purports to be a cool- headed pragmatist but turns out to be otherwise, check out Navy Blues from season 8. Netflix has it. It's a much more compelling episode.
