A Time to Kill (1996)
Story, script and acting flawless.
This will always be one of my favorite films, and I've seen a lot. I loved it before I knew that it was based on a true story but knowing that it is just makes it so much more poignant. John Grisham has said that the story was "very autobiographical" in that the novel's "young attorney is basically me" and the drama is based on a case he witnessed.
It's no coincidence that the main cast members all went on to have outstanding acting careers. Not an easy watch but most of the best dramas aren't. A rating of just 7.5/10 does not do it justice in my opinion. It's becoming more and more difficult to find films which really make you question where the line lies between right and wrong.
The Staircase (2022)
Am I missing something ?
I'm watching the fifth episode because it's been hyped as a great story but I'm waiting for the twist. Why does it get such great reviews when there seems to be nothing interesting about the story. I'll probably keep watching because there must be something about it to warrant a documentary and a dramatisation but so far I don't see it. I'm just hoping for a dramatic twist at some point that'll make it worthwhile.
Around the World in 80 Days (2021)
Great Entertainment
You always get the predictable comments from people who like to take offense but if you don't have chips on your shoulders it's a very entertaining series with a typically excellent performance from David Tennant. The story is brilliant as we all know but no it's not "too woke" as some would have you believe. I find those accusations frankly ridiculous and I am well aware that woke culture has taken some things much too far. All of the characters are interesting well acted and backed by a classic story with some nice tweaks.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Lazy storytelling but watchable
I enjoyed watching it but it is a story that's been told thousands of times just with a black cast. The acting is good and the script is fine but ignoring the fact that the cast is black nothing stands out about the film or makes it stand out from the crowd. So it has to be a just above average rating from me.
Sleepers (1996)
Masterpiece
Amongst my top 5 favourite films of all time. Ignore what the critics have said you should see this film and make up your own mind. Has an element of Shawshank about it but it's more harrowing.
Kat and the Band (2019)
Rescued from being appalling
Funny to see 10/10 ratings here. There's nobody genuinely rating this as 10/10. The story is unoriginal and uninteresting. The acting from the majority of the cast is appalling. The main actress isn't bad and Dougie isn't too bad. That and the fact that there is a feel good factor to it saves it from being a 1/10 for me but it is instantly forgettable.
