Arang (2006)
A few scares, but nothing more
I've been hoping that this movie will bring something new to the South Korean horror industry, but I was wrong. The plot is basically the same as in tons of other Asian movies, dealing with an old grudge, that seeks retribution. I would say the best part of the movie is it's beginning, as later on almost every scene is so predictable it makes it hard to watch. The ghost is depicted as in a dozen Asian movies, a female with long black hair falling over her face, with "spooky" eyes. A strange mix of Ringu an Ju-on, to be polite and not say rip-off. There are twists in the plot, but again, the twist is so predictable it makes you laugh. Even though, this is a good movie, it will entertain you for 90 minutes, but that's all. You won't be talking about it and hoping to see it again. As I'm a fan of Asian horrors, I was glad to watch this, but after seeing it I can't say I'm delighted. A few scares, predictable plot and twists, long haired ghosts with "funny" eyes.
Emperor: Emperial Live Ceremony (1999)
Black ceremony
What to say for one of the first black metal DVD releases? It's great, although the camera sucks. And you get to stare at Ihshan all the time. I understand he's the frontman of the band, but it's not that we're all goth chicks... There are no special features, so you get too see the concert and that's about it. I expected some "behind the stage" scenes, like on the mayhem release, but obviously Candlelight thought it wasn't necessary. The sound's pretty fine, for a black metal band. The video was recorded after the Equilibrium album, and there are a couple of songs from there. But even the orthodox fans from the Nightside era will be satisfied with the playlist, and the way the songs are played.
All in all a great concert, lacking a better camera and special features.
Satyricon: Roadkill Extravaganza (2001)
Unholy black metal road trip
OK, let's get clear about something: don't compare this release with some other DVD release, like mayhem's or marduk's. This is NOT a concert, this is, as the title says, only a tour view with the guys from Satyricon.Taped by them with a lousy camera. You'll get too see shots from some concerts, here and there. The video is based on the relationship with other bands and getting wasted in all sorts of way. As the guy who commented this remarked, the quality is not among the best, but he obviously forgot something. This video was released on VHS when Rebel Extravaganza came to the stores, the DVD version is just the old tape burnt again on DVD. There were no special features before, so there are none now. Comparing a DVD concert with this video is just silly. If you are a fan, you'll like it, it lasts for 2 hours, and you get too see how the guys entertain themselves on tour.
Doragon heddo (2003)
A human approach to disaster
I really liked this movie. It is a "catastrophe" movie, even though it has nothing to do with the typical western idea of such a happening. It does not indulge in the process of reversing the trauma, it rather centers it's plot on surviving the drama. The characters are not typical western heroes, willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the collective. They are merely humans trying to survive in a world suddenly so different and hostile. It covers the bonds between the survivors, the human will to live, and the human will to just let go. An excellent movie, with some forms of dialogue typical for Japanese movies, and fond of human relations. It has great effects, but it's not a Hoolywood blockbuster movie with stupid plot. The disaster is just described, some ideas are given, but there is not detailed description of what happened. And there is no turning back.
