Southpaw (2015)
Boxing movies at their finest.
Southpaw is a great film about Billy Hope (Gyllenhaal) a boxer who lost his wife and it affected his in ring performance costing him dearly.
This film is amazing from the directing to the soundtrack. I believe that Forest Whitaker gave an incredible performance and Gyllenhaal was perfect, maybe the best of his career, I wouldn't be shocked if Gyllenhaal earned his second Academy Award nomination with this performance. What was really interesting was how director Antoine Fuqua managed to make this film not only emotional and tugging on the audience's heartstrings but was jam- packed with action. The thing I enjoyed the most about this film was how aggressive it was, reinforcing the aggression involved in preparing for a boxing match. This is emphasised with Billy Hope having anger issues and Gyllenhaal excellently portrayed the struggles with being short tempered in today's society.
Despite this in my opinion the film unsuccessfully showed me how Billy Hope was raised in the 'ghetto'. He wasn't very fortunate in his upbringing but it didn't make me sympathise with him even more than I did.
Fantastic film and I would recommend it to everyone old enough to enjoy it.
Grade - A+
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
The fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise
Mad Max: Fury Road is a movie about a post apocalyptic earth and Max Rockatansky (Hardy) reluctantly joins Imperator Furiosa's (Theron) crew to have a chance of survival against the relentless Immortan Joe (Keays-Byrne) and Nux (Hoult) Immortan's former slave just increases the intensity of the journey.
It is a fun, thrilling and adventurous movie possibly my favorite apocalyptic themed movie with suspense at every turn. I really enjoyed how Mad Max would be classed as an insane person in today's society but he was the most grounded character in the film and the producers very subtly showed us that Max was psychotic but simultaneously sane which is a very difficult task to achieve. The chases with the trucks, lorries and heavy artillery were very fascinating to watch. Since we are all used to the car chases with Dodge Chargers and Bugattis in urban streets, it was very refreshing to watch vehicle chases with hefty vehicles which don't move very quickly and cause lots of damage to its surroundings in the middle of the desert. Also the soundtrack and costumes were perfectly crafted everything felt authentic and suited the genre.
However a weakness in the plot was that we had no introduction to the Earth before the Apocalypse we have no idea of what happened and why the apocalypse occurred.
Mad Max is a Fantastic movie and would recommend it to any movie-goers. Grade - A+
Woman in Gold (2015)
Maria Altmann tries to get her possession back
Woman In Gold is a lovely film about a woman called Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) whose aunt was displayed in a priceless picture which the Nazi's took during WWII and with help from others she attempts to retrieve the artwork.
I think that Helen Mirren's portrayal of Maria Altmann was fantastic she made the audience feel sympathy but also managed to make us despise her at once, which is a difficult thing to do. I really felt sympathy for Maria when she was separated from her husband in Austria and had to start a new life in America with no: family, friends or English knowledge. I also acknowledged the fact that throughout the present time Maria refused to speak German (in spite of the Nazis); at the end she began to speak German to fellow Austrians which evokes how she is open to forget about the pandemonium the Nazis caused. Another thing I liked was how Ronald (Ryan Reynolds) is a long-time but distant family friend with Maria's family and this perfectly introduced them to each other.
Despite this, I was slightly irritated by how much attention Ryan Reynolds' character received because it took away focus from Maria. I was fascinated by her background, thoughts, feelings and the monumental story of the 'woman in gold'.
Overall I thought it was an excellent film. Grade - A
Fast & Furious 7 (2015)
Deckard Shaw wants to avenge his brothers defeat vs the crew
Fast and furious 7/ furious 7 is the seventh installment of the fast and furious franchise. The film continues from the events of furious 6. Deckard Shaw the brother of 'Shaw' from furious 6 is back looking for revenge on Dominic Torreto for what he did to his brother previously.
This film is my favorite of the franchise it took a more comedic and thrilling approach and was less about a 'hood family'; which I think was a smart decision by director James Wan, focusing more on the funny stuff than the depressing let's all die together ideals. I think that Tyrese Gibson was really funny in this movie and the dialogue between his character and Ludicrous' character was quite humorous. What I like about and fast and furious movies and can expect from them is hot girls and hot cars in this movie they went all out with the babes and motors with cameos from Iggy Azalea and Ronda Rousey. In this particular film the action wasn't necessarily realistic but amazing to look at for example when Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker) drove a car through skyscrapers in Dubai it looked spectacular. Also since Paul tragically passed away, to shoot the rest of the film they had CGI the rest of Paul Walker's scene on to his brother's body and I couldn't tell the difference the CGI was impeccable.
Having said this some of the action was too unrealistic. Usually it all just looks great so we ignore it but the scene where the cars parachuted out of a plane was absolutely crazy and there is no argument for it, no way can cars parachute out of a plane. I also didn't enjoy the moments when Toretto and Letty (Rodriguez) keep on talking about her amnesia and try to bring back her memories with all these references to the previous movies.
Overall I think this was a good film appropriate for some laughs with the lads or whatever.
The Age of Adaline (2015)
A lovely film on how love is ageless
The movie The Age of Adaline is a good film overall. It is about A woman Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) who becomes fundamentally ageless around the end of the 19th century due to a horrific incident.
The casting was spot on and Blake Lively not only showed her acting abilities in this role, but also her potential I believe she could grow into a huge Hollywood actress with a big role. Harrison Ford had an enjoyable role as the father of
In the movie I really enjoyed the decision director Lee Toland Kreiger made of having narration in the film which provided us with every statistic necessary this gave us points which you could argue weren't pertinent but they were good reminders of where we are up to in the plot. I also enjoyed the little twist with how Harrison Ford's character William having been a previous lover of Adaline's, decades before she met his son's character Ellis. Adaline were once lovers when William was a young man and he was ready to propose, but reluctantly Adaline stood him up to save him of distress. The director managed to make us feel sympathy for William's character, since he had to let his long lost love Adaline go for his son.
Having said this what I disliked was how when all is revealed that Adaline hadn't aged for generations and Harrison Ford's character asked his son how did he know he loved Adaline he said: "because it doesn't feel right without her". To me personally that wasn't a strong enough reason for why a man, who has loved this woman for decades and thought he had lost her, should sacrifice her. I also didn't like the fact that for Adaline to continue to age all it took was one measly shock from a defibrillator, because the reason she stopped ageing was because she was strook by lightning. A defibrillator in no way can equal to the voltage of a lightning bolt. Another problem I had was that the ending seemed rushed all we saw was Adaline losing a strand of hair and it ended shortly after. I would have appreciated if the director could have let some more time pass and we see her die. I know a little bit gritty but that would be a happy ending for Adaline.
Overall I feel this was a great film and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a dramatic romance film.
