Tom à la ferme (2013)
An Absolutely Compelling Psycho-Sexual Thriller
This film might actually be my very favorite. The way it's shot (sublime, vaguely vintage-like, rather grainy and somewhat distant character-wise) is what corresponds to my aesthetic exactly. I love the trope of the return to nature combined with the numbness of grief, that ultimately shape the optimal setting for a psychological thriller such as this. Violent, psycho-sexually-oriented and intense, this film tells the story of a young man who mourns the loss of his lover and finds himself both physically and mentally trapped in his partner's birthplace, a farm, the residents of which deny the sexuality of their deceased loved one. Numbed by grief and entrapped in his lies he falls victim to his lover's older brother's abuse, which he's unable to escape, as the mother's imperious, all-seeing shadow watches it all unfold yet still allows it to happen.
This film is a piece of art. The well-paced storyline, engaging and intense as it is, the excellent rendition on behalf of all the actors alike, the stunning photography, and the melancholic setting captured so beautifully, make up a powerful psychological thriller that you can't completely get off of your mind. Xavier Dolan's best picture, in my opinion.
Prisoners (2013)
Hollywood Noir at its best
A nail-biting drama about a father who'd break all limits to find his daughter, who disappeared along with a friend and are thought to have been abducted, unwilling to trust the case to the hands of the police. Although all acting was overall excellent, Paul Dano's rendition especially captivated me. Wasn't a fun of all this pulp, but Dano's acting wouldn't let me rate this picture less than 9. I loved the open ending. Such a good film!
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
A Really Good Movie
My appreciation for this film amplifies every time I watch it. Well-paced storyline, well-presented characters with depth and a detailed background for each to provide solid motives, great acting, and excellent photography. I loved the open ending. A really elegant and stylish picture in all its violence and pulp, one of these films that you can't really get out of your head.
Karppi (2018)
Finnish Crime Drama
Modern Finland and its struggle to economically, politically, environmentally, and socially evolve is pretty skillfully illustrated through the eyes of Sofia Karppi and Sakari Nurmi, two police investigators who have reluctantly coupled up to solve a curious murder case. It's really interesting to see what an introverted community the Finnish society is, and in what ways this introversion affects daily living. Great renditions on behalf of the actors, engaging storylines that fade nicely into each other in both seasons, excellent cinematography, and just enough pulp for my tastes. My current favorite tv series, hoping for a season three!
Kastanjemanden (2021)
A Promising Crime TV Series
A really engaging and well-paced plotline, strong renditions on behalf of the actors, and a truly fascinating cinematography to be amazed by. A couple of things didn't click for me, however. I would have liked a more decisive motive behind the murders, I'd prefer it if there wasn't this currently catchy "the perpetrator is killed in the end" trope, that seems like a sloppy attempt to avoid further explanations to me, and it'd be great if Thulin didn't have this overused "work over personal life" character trait. A perfectly decent TV series overall!
