Paterson (2016)
A heartwarming slice-of-life movie
If you're looking for something relaxing and cute, this movie is for you! Seriously, it's going to leave you all warm and fuzzy inside.
My only problem with it is that we don't get to see the couple interact in more meaningful ways; it felt like I had to believe their relationship was great even though I did not get to witness any deeply meaningful moments between them. I'm not sure if this counts as a spoiler but I used the tag just in case!
The fact that the whole thing revolves around slice-of-life poetry just makes it better and fuzzier ^ ^
Hungry Hearts (2014)
A school project would have looked better than this.
So... I watched the entire thing only because of Adam Driver (I figured it would be worth my time despite how low-budget the film looked right off the bat) since I've always liked his acting, but this movie is so awful! It's so horribly made you'd think it was someone's botched school project, but even that would have looked better! What's up with the weird angles and horrible lighting? And Mina that hasn't been much more than a zombie since the beginning and somehow I have to believe that Jude is so in love with her he can't divorce her? Um... This is a terrible movie. Not even Driver can save it.
PS.: I cheered when Mina died, was I not supposed to?
PS. 2: Stop making vegan people look bad!
Stranger Things (2016)
Season 3 was insultingly unnecessary.
Season 1 was a masterpiece. There shouldn't have been a 2nd one in the first place but, okay, season 2 was alright. Season 3, now... ughh there was no reason for this one to exist whatsoever. No character development, no answers to any of our questions from the previous seasons, nothing. Hopper became unreasonable out of nowhere, all of his development as a character was taken away for... reasons, I guess?
Season 3 also felt more like a Scooby Doo episode, but with ridiculous propaganda everywhere and unnecessary dialogue as well.
Making Hopper take a huge step back as a character, then killing him and then throwing the hint that yeah, um, maaaybe he didn't die after all was cheap at best. I mean, really!? This tired trope? I'd swear the writers were different ones this time, but... nope. If you can't make a decent season, then don't make one at all. I'd rather the series had ended at a point when it was still watchable.
Also: Max shouldn't have so much screen time, and shouldn't be sold as a "wise" advisor to El. We didn't really need the teen drama, it wasn't even believable or decently written. Huge disappointment, season 3 dragged the whole series in the mud.
Oh and a girl couldn't possibly not like Steve, she'd have to be gay for that to happen. Clumsily trying to be inclusive, I get it, but... meh. Didn't get that right either.
Finally, to be fair, Billy's death scene (apart from being emotionally abusive to the audience, cheap trick) was spectacular. I couldn't look away even though I wanted to.
In general... a tired "meh". Stop making the show worse with every season.
Funny Cow (2017)
Interesting and tough at times, definitely not a comedy.
There must have been a misunderstanding; Funny Cow is by no means a comedy.
The worthwhile part of this films is its honesty, but it also raises a red flag: why is a film like this necessary today? Watch and find out, is all I can say.
Message and meaning apart, there isn't much to praise (unfortunately!). All the characters are at least flat, only the protagonist gets a decent bit of development. Also, I understand a film like this ought to feel bleak and hopeless, so please, please don't tag it as a comedy! People will watch and feel very confused at fist; disappointed about the middle, and disheartened by the end.
Funny Cow does have something to say, but only to those who need to hear it. To those that don't, it's just another not-quite-there film. Decent effort put in there, but... meh.
Bernard and Doris (2006)
Great actors, extremely bad pacing and nearly nonexistent plot.
I was initially excited to have found a movie starring Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes, as they both are amazing in their work; their performances can really make a film shine.
Bernard and Doris, however, was a complete failure for the following two reasons: horrible pacing, plus the lack of an interesting plot. Despite the solid acting, it was hard to watch in one go because of how slow and dull it was as a whole.
Perfectos desconocidos (2017)
Absolutely horrible.
Cheap, ugly, an overall disgusting remake. Do yourself a favor and stick to the italian original.
Las chicas del cable (2017)
The acting is actually worse than the soundtrack.
First of all, I started this series because of its good reviews around the internet, but dropped it after having watched only the first episode. Given that I don't know what happens in it as a whole, I can't comment on the plot, character development etc.
But... oh it was so awful! Disgustingly inappropriate music aside, the acting in the first episode was too bad to be convincing even for a minute. It felt like watching a much cheaper kind of show, and that wasn't what I was looking for (or how the series was advertised). Overacting everywhere, especially in the protagonist's awkward moments of... perplexity, I suppose?
I'm giving Las Chicas del Cable a 2, because the costumes were okay.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017)
Absolutely amazing
Let me start by saying I grew up with the book series, so I was prepared to (at least partially) dislike the tv series under the notion that "The book is always better". Well, I was delightfully surprised by the quality of the show: first of all, the casting is excellent --something that rarely happens with book adaptations. The black humor of the books is also flawlessly conveyed and even enhanced, I cannot recommend this show enough! It is very well-paced, beautifully shot and perfectly adapted for the now adult fans of the books to enjoy the story once again. The second season is even better than the first, which was also a great success. It deservess a 10/10 rating, I'd rate it even higher if I could!
Daphne (2017)
This movie has no purpose whatsoever.
Daphne is a grown woman with a whiny 15-year-old's existential crisis, just to annoy people. I am sorry to say it but Daphne is even worse than Ladybird. In Ladybird, though, the main character is a kid, so you'd expect some irrational behaviors here and there, that's what you signed up for when you chose the film anyway. But here.. You watch the same boring, annoying person that doesn't change a single bit of her purposeless existence. The ending credits start and you realise you've wasted your time on a movie that had no reason to be made, at all.
The only good thing I have to say about this film is that in almost every frame, all the colors present are beautiful and, to be honest, this was the only reason I decided to watch it in the first place. But a nice color selection doesn't make it worthwhile, of course.
I chose to include a spoiler alert just in case my comment on Daphne remaining the same disgusting, boring person throughout the film was considered a spoiler.
