16 Blocks (2006)
Good action-thriller by Richard Donner
What worked: After the pile of flaming feces that was "Timeline" Richard Donner has stepped up to the plate again but this time stepping his game up and delivering arguably his best film since his "Lethal Weapon" series. The acting here is top-notch, Bruce Willis should get some credit for the amount of believability he brings as worn out, drunken cop (Jack Mosley) who is having a really long day and wants to rest, but before he can do that he has to take a witness (Eddie Bunker played by Mos Def) to court, 16 Blocks away in 2 hours but after an attempted murder of the witness fails. Jack's day goes completely awry as the people such as crooked cops who are willing to do anything to prevent Eddie from making it to court. Mos Def also shows he has screen presence as Eddie Bunker, he turns what most actors would have made an annoying character and turn him into a lovable yet questionable hustler. David Morse is great as usual as Frank Nugent, Jack old partner. The action scenes are completely character driven they are not there for sake of being there, rather the action scenes propel the story forward, and they are very tense yet realistic, An example is the bus scene, very tense.
What didn't work: They are some small plot-holes here and there but they don't ruin the experience of the movie. And some scenes do need a certain level of disbelief but only a few scenes. And Jack's motive for doing what he was doing is isn't properly solved. But these are rather small and they do not detract from the overall experience of the movie.
Overall: This is a great action thriller by Richard Donner, recommended 8/10
Doom 3 (2004)
Scary as hell!!!
What worked: This game is absolutely stunning!!!The graphics are possibly the best on the Xbox giving Halo 2 a run for it's money, the environments are so detailed that almost every corner you'll be feeling dirty. The game play is great, the action is high energy and scary, every turn you'll feel as if some freak of nature is gonna jump at you. The monsters are incredibly detailed, the bosses will make u crap your pants.
What didn't work: This game can be a little hard especially with the boss battles and this game is too dark literally, why couldn't the flashlight be taped to the gun!?(I couldn't see jack!) and last but not least where is the four-player multiplayer(I don't mean system link or online gaming neither)I mean four controllers at once. But these are only minor problems.
Overall: This game is the scariest game on xbox, minus a few problems it is definitely a buy. Recommended 9/10
Torque (2004)
loud, noisy, and dumb just how I like it!
The acting in this film is decent Martin Henderson and Ice Cube do the best they can for their poorly written roles. The action is this film is in a word........Craaaaaazy! None of this stuff could ever happen but it is still exciting and blast to see on a big clear screen and a loud surround sound system. On the flip side the story in this movie is nothing new and makes the film more cliché' than it needs to be. And special effects in this movie are very crappy looking and a times it looks like a glamorized video game. I would recommend this movie if you're looking for a stupid, loud and fun time but if you're looking for Shakespeare look somewhere else. 6/10
Equilibrium (2002)
Excellent 9/10
What worked: This movie is great, The acting is great, Christian Bale is a wonderful actor and carries the subtle dramatic scenes well and does the action scenes with ease. The story is good(even though it does borrow a lot from other films like "Fahrenheit 451"). And the action scenes are top-notch, the action scenes are integral to the story they are not there for the sake of being there. And the special effects and production values are so great, it looks as if it cost 100 million dollars to make(Believe or not this film cost 20 million dollars).
What didn't work: Some times the story gets to complicated for its own good and there are some big plot-holes. And why wasn't this film released wide(It was only released in limited theaters) If the filmmakers would have advertised this movie better and released in widely in theaters it could have been a blockbuster. Plus this movie is for people looking for a smart action film not a dumb one like "xXx" so there are so some slow paced scenes in the movie.
Overall: this is an Excellent action film with great acting and amazing action with flaws that can be overlooked. 9/10
xXx (2002)
fun
What worked: Vin Diesel is great no matter what film he is in, even if it is bad. Diesel's performance was simply bad ass. He makes this film and carries the action really well. The rest of the cast namely Martin Czokas and Asia Argento do the best they can with their roles. The action in this film is INTENSE! I had felt a rush like that since "JP3",(the brilliantly edited avalanche sequence will make you get on the edge of your seat). And the production design is great you know they spent a lot on this film.
What didn't work: The villain here is so stereotypical, evil Russian accent, machine that could destroy country and create world war 3, this is all to familiar. And the dialouge is horrible in this film and at times it hard to understand to what Vin Diesel is saying.
Overall: This film is fun action movie with flaws that can be overlooked.6/10
Halo 2 (2004)
My favorite game ever.
What worked: The action on this game is so intense and the production values and story is so great this could have easily been a movie. Playing this game on legendary with a friend is incredible. The graphics are possibly the best on the Xbox. And if you have surround sound crank this baby up, you'll be ducking and dodging at every bullet ricocheting off the wall. The level are incredibly huge! The missions with the SCARAB will have you looking at the screen in awe.
What didn't work: I wish the game would have spent more time on Earth fighting off the Aliens and I wish we could have seen innocents slaughtered mercilessly by the Aliens and why is this game rated M, most of the violence is against the Aliens anyway.
Overall: This game is possibly the best game on the Xbox. Recommended 10/10.
xXx: State of the Union (2005)
Pretty good, better than the first
What worked: My review is pretty short and the time I started typing this is around 2:26 am Sunday, so please bear with me. This film is essentially the first film on steroids and without Diesel(the star of the first film). What worked: First off, Ice Cube makes this film(He's more bad ass than Diesel is)and he carries the action sequences really well, Samuel L. Jackson is good as Gibbons he's smart ass, bad ass, and funny as hell. The action in this film tops anything done in the previous XXX(the train sequence blows away any thing seen in XXX) film and the story even though it is preposterous, delivers(It's basically way to drive the action scenes). And the special effects for the most part was terrific. The women in this film (especially Nona Gaye)look way better than Asia Argento(unless you like pale small skinny women). And I loved how they made little references to the first XXX.
What didn't work: The dialogue in this film is very HORRIBLE and some of the jokes were hit and miss and some of the special effects looked very obvious and fake. And it is really necessary for Willem Dafoe to keep on playing villains(He's a great actor but he always plays a villain)I would like for him to be cast as an regular person or a hero for a change.
Overall: This movie was a fun action flick with cool special effects and decent acting. 6/10
