Cosmic Horror

Not things from Earth. Not things from other planets. Not things that humans have names for in our folklore, religious texts, or science books.
Unfathomable other places, things that come from before time and beyond space, things all around you that you cannot see. Concepts that show how limited humanity is in its understanding of reality and how fragile that reality is. Concepts that would drive a human insane if they started to comprehend them.
'Cosmic Horror' is sometimes used to mean 'Written or inspired by H.P. Lovecraft'. While he was the best known visionary of the genre, it certainly didn't begin and it doesn't end with him.
You might notice that some of these newer movies have low IMDb ratings. That's why I've included Rotten Tomato scores where needed. I have a whole rant about this foolishness here.
Cosmic Sci-fi goes here.

Rad Nostalgia for Eighties Kids

Light sabers, whip-toting archaeologists, proton packs, dream killers: everything that was once original and fun has been regurgitated and run into the ground by a desperate Hollywood. These creatively bankrupt rehashes and legacy sequels/reboots are not going away until they finally stop making money.
As an antidote to all that, enjoy some original stories that happen to have gnarly Eighties flair. Several of them call to mind perfected versions of those mind-numbingly terrible toy commercials masquerading as cartoons we all loved at the time.
...Yeah, go watch one episode of whatever show you're thinking of now as an adult. I dare you!
I genuinely liked the first season of Stranger Things. But that was a long time ago (I love how the nostalgia-influenced show just kept repeating its first season out of fear of doing anything new). I can't in good conscience add the show to this list.

Of course, my real number one would be hiking.
Know your route so you don't get lost, choose a sunny day, bring water, load happy jaunty music on your headphone device, DRIVE THERE FIRST, and enjoy.
There are lots of trippy and heavy movies that I like sober (Pan's Labyrinth, Brazil, any David Lynch or David Cronenberg) but I would think those would be total downers not sober.
I love Big Lebowski, but I'd never watch it 420 and I don't understand why that's a thing. I don't want to watch movies about stoner characters. Stop recommending them to me, every other list on the internet!
I hate to say it because it's ruining Hollywood, but nostalgia is good stuff when you're 420. Do a google image search for happy meal toys from each year you were six to ten. Watch someone on youtube play a video game you used to play as a kid. Find a movie you watched a bunch of times back in the day.

Not a list of Horror-Comedies per se, just a collection of wacky, bloody, booby, over-the-top romps. Suitable for watching with groups of friends and/or booze.
As such, I have noted if a film is not in English (though you really shouldn't be friends with anyone who can't read some subtitles for 90 minutes).
I'm not including any so-bad-they're-good movies. These movies are all exactly what they set out to be.
I've included Rotten Tomatoes scores where needed. Because some of you IMDb voters were clearly unable to grasp the point of these movies. Yeah, I see you!

An intrusive Presence

An evil non-corporeal being is stalking/ tormenting our protagonist with the ultimate goal of driving them insane, possessing them, feeding off them, and/or killing them.
Perhaps it has been walking around planet earth since the dawn of man, being passed from person to person as part of its bizarre life cycle. Usually no one else can see it and no one believes our protagonist.
Anti-Christmas
64 titles |
Public
Movies taking place at Christmas that are guaranteed not to leave you jolly.
These are sorted by genre; Drama, Action/Thriller, Crime/Mystery/Noir, Comedy, Horror, TV
I'm not counting movies where only a scene or two or only an early segment of the film take place around the Holidays. It has to be at least a good chunk of the movie and/or the big climax.

Monster as Metaphor

Our protagonist is threatened by a being that represents either something that needs fixing in themself, or a major obstacle they must deal with in their life. These movies are all still scary; the protagonist and those around them are still in serious danger, regardless of the origin of the threat.
Good Horror Anthologies (with Rotten Tomatoes scores)

Horror Anthologies are a tricky breed because they're almost always uneven to some degree (one segment is better than another). Here are some that are enjoyable throughout ...mostly.
There are Horror Anthologies with only one good segment. If you're a fan of short Horror and you have the time, I encourage you to find and watch these: Body Bags only has "The Gas Station" Dead of Night 1977 only has "Bobby"

Conan-esque

Conan the Barbarian 1982 - A glorious epic of sleaze, violence, bewbs, macho power fantasy, severed heads, and persistent glorification of physical strength. All in a brutal world of weird fantasy.
If it's your favorite movie, you're probably a facist incel. But if you don't like it at all, you're probably lame and boring.
In the years after its release, Hollywood suits who didn't 'get it' pumped out multiple rip-offs (Beastmaster, Ator, Yor, Sheena, Deathstalker). All had conan-like main characters and all took place in conan-esque worlds, but all lacked the imagination, the ambition, and the creative guts. They even tried adapting Robert E. Howard's other characters, Red Sonia and Kull, with little success.
Here are some productions that 'get it'. Most aren't ripoffs, but they each share at least a few of those elements that made Conan '82 great.
