My Family (2000)
Very good, very laughter-provoking series
This is one of the best TV series I have ever watched. Seeing it was so funny, I have bought the DVD box and am practically done watching through all the episodes.
The humour in the series is overwhelmingly abundant in many ways. You cannot help but laugh.
Ben, the father of this family, is the funniest guy. His seriousness, his unwillingness to give up, his constant state of annoyance and anger, his manifested selfishness, his lack of concern for what happens round him and all of his other characteristics combine beautifully to create one of the most humorous characters you will ever find. Of course, many of these characteristics are bad ones, but still funny (that's the point). Robert Lindsay, who plays Ben, does an excellent job.
Susan is a nice mother, but also rather selfish and a control-freak. The way she controls and manipulates her husband is often lamentable, in my opinion, but funny and laughter-provoking.
The children have a natural reaction to the fact that their parents are the way they are: they do not really like to be with them. This is very interesting and funny as well. Each of the children makes the show funny in a different way.
With so many different characters, it is likely that you will identify, in a number of aspects, with at least one of them. For example, I identify, to a significant extent, with Michael (in that he is an intelligent guy, that he likes to use his laptop, that he finds himself in the midst of his family of 'idiots', and that he is about my current age around the fourth series) and also, to a lesser extent, with Ben (in that he has a certain spirit of individuality, enjoying being alone with no-one to disturb him).
I suggest that you do not show this series to children. It was rated '12' in the UK, and rightly so. It contains some moderate language (no swear words, but a few insults), some degree of sexual seduction, implied nudity and many sexual references.
All in all, it is a very good series, likely to make you laugh a lot with every single episode, and suitable for pre-teens, teens and adults alike.
Gravity (2013)
Quite an interesting film
This is an interesting film. Weighing pros and cons, I actually recommend it if you appreciate some realistic drama situations.
Shortly after the film begins, disaster strikes. One of the most interesting things about this plot is that the disaster involved is so realistic that it could actually happen! This is a survival story which could really, essentially, be repeated. If you like realistic films, this is a good thing.
It is quite interesting to hear the conversations of the astronauts in the beginning, particularly with the slight humour and interesting stories of one astronaut.
After disaster strikes, the drama and thrilling is virtually constant; however, it is not scary or frightening, which makes it all quite interesting. At this point, the survivor(s) of the initial disaster (I shall not spoil who or how many they were) attempt(s) to stay alive — and the way that this all happens is quite remarkable in every aspect; as I said, it is thrilling, and it makes you wonder what will happen next.
The outcome is, very simply, surprising. These all are good things I enjoyed in the film.
There were only a few things I disliked. The film is, in some aspects, scientifically inaccurate. For details, I recommend reading, in the FAQ section, the question, 'Did the film follow the laws of physics?' (may contain some minor spoilers — perhaps you should read after watching the film, for a better comprehension).
Another thing that you may dislike if, like me, you are an evangelical Christian is that, at one point, one character prays to a dead person.
And, of course, as in most films nowadays, there are a few swear words (one F-word and a number of S-words), which also reduce the quality of the film. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to show this film to children. Beware, also, that some perhaps disturbing images are briefly shown, and that the entire drama of the film may just be too intense for some sensitive people (see Parents Guide for details).
Nevertheless, all in all, I must say it was a good film.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
Well... Not so good...
This was really not a very good movie — but I cannot say it was a very bad one either. It did show some interesting things, but it was still perhaps not worth it.
Let me start with the good things. To begin with, it really is kind of an interesting love story. This is rather notable and, I must admit, it leaves me wanting (because I am a 16-year-old who has never had a girlfriend).
I appreciated some of the things said. For example, near the end, Hazel's speech regarding infinity does provide some matter for thought. Augustus's metaphor regarding the cigarette was notably interesting as well. Thus, I cannot say I left the cinema the same I entered.
Now, for the bad things. The whole idea of this love story is kind of cliché. That is one thing. They meet in an unusual way, she thinks he's a jerk, but then, somehow (I'd like to know how!) she likes him, and so on.
By the way, what were the guys' parents thinking about when they chose their names? Hazel and Augustus? Really?
And then, of course, we could not have a good movie without having someone dying at the end!
Furthermore, of course, this film contains a few swear words, which, for me, always decrease a film's quality. It also encourages premarital sex.
In all, it has a few interesting stuff (I'm not telling you not to watch it), but it has quite some bad things as well. You can watch it if you want but, if you're like me, do not expect much.
