True Detective: Night Country: Part 1 (2024)
Season 4, Episode 1

Meh, TD eaten by feminist propaganda
14 February 2024
After a lengthy hiatus due to the pandemic, the return of True Detective leaves much to be desired. Don't blame Nick for voicing his disappointment (he has since deleted the tweets, i hear). In comparison to the masterful storytelling and acting prowess of True Detective's first season, this latest installment falls short. From the onset, Night Country struggles to capture the essence of its predecessors.

The use of Billie Eilish's track feels out of place, lacking the atmospheric resonance one might expect. The opening sequence, with its overt emphasis on female empowerment, comes across as forced and detracts from the narrative rather than enhancing it. Instances like the female trooper's swift takedown of suspects and Jodie Foster's character's condescending tone towards her colleague feel more like attempts at 'getting even' rather than serving the story.

Contrast this with True Detective's gripping first episode, where a compelling case and the dynamic interplay between two captivating characters immediately draw viewers into the mystery at hand.

Jane Campion as both writer and director has previously showcased her adeptness at crafting feminist narratives in projects like Top of the Lake, but Essa Lopez's Night Country fails to evoke the same level of empathy or suspense. Unless you're specifically seeking out a modern-day feminist take, this series may not be worth your time.
