Storyline not convincing
13 April 2021
I like the idea of making a story of parents who cannot take care of their children. But since the parents are not well characterized, I do not believe in the course of events. Salle in particular is simply too nice and why he needs two jobs and work day and night is never explained. The solution he chooses to solve the family's dilemma is not at all convincing. The police and the Social Administration's handling of various incidents is not probable enough, but instead excessively stupid. Therefore, the construction of the plot is too weak to make me want to see all the episodes clearly.

Marvelous cast and story

Warning: Spoilers
Forgive my bad English, but I must say that that the story was so very good that I really hope for a second season. The female detective, played by Carey Muligan, is the closest to any female role I've encountered that is somewhat close to the character of Modesty Blaise. Differences may be huge, but what they have in common is the fight for rightness that in a way that goes beyond any story thats has male protagonists.Kip Glaspie "senses", as she herself explains, the thruth and follows her instinct all the way until the audience understands the complexity of the affair told. This is a story of how a female heroine uses her understanding of the system to find the killers and at the same time enlight viewers of the difficult situation we ask immigrants to accept in their efforts to start a new life. Extra plus to actress Nicola Walker that never fails a sensitive role of character.

The 80's had it

What strikes me while watching the film, is that truth to reality is really refreshing. No editing in the world can make up to a camera catching a dark, rainy street as they could back in those days when equipment was not developed. Aristoleles claimed that cruelty should be committed outside the scene, that is, in the background. The imagination of the spectator is far more imaginative than a view of the actual event. Therefore, leaving out is stronger in terms of storytelling than showing. Quite the contrary to contemporary movies, I'd say. The advantage of this story is thus the suspense built up on lack of knowledge. There is no flirting with the audience; you do not know in advance who dunnit. There is no flirting with the audience on the task of staging one of the protagonists as a gay either. This is not the greatest movie, but really worth seeing.
