Song of the Sea (2014)
Beautiful
Wow, where to start? This film was beautiful to look at and on so many other levels. It penetrates the viewer emotionally and mythically hitting right in the heart. I've never seen a film that manages to capture feeling so much. I think it's the beautiful color and music. About half way through this turned in to my favorite movie in a long while. I love that elements of Irish folklore are being brought to the screen considering the mythology and folklore of their civilization, despite being so powerful, is disregarded theatrically. I hope the films Tomm Moore is doing will inspire others to get involved in bringing this lost seed back to our lives. I tried to go deeper into this review but suffice to say I was just left in awe and don't really know what else to say but if you wonder if you should view it as I said the art is amazing and so is the story so all the elements for a joyful experience are there. I cried more than I've cried in years and I don't even really ever cry but it was tears of the sheer beauty I felt. This was a story that really captivated me and I was captured and my mind put in the rear view for the last hour.
Batman: Year One (2011)
Ben Mackenzie is terrible
Ben Mackenzie is the worst batman I've ever heard. The guy who plays Gordon is good. The film is too comic like....going from scene to scene in an uncinematic way. Selena Kyle shouldn't even be in this its only an hour and her scenes take up an entire 5 minutes and she plays no role in the story. This film is extremely boring. Im being generous giving it a three. I believe the only explanation for this poor voice performance is that Ben Mackenzie was on drugs or something. Listen to the first line in the film and he sounds like someone is forcing him to read the entire oxford dictionary and he's on letter J and getting too tired to care. How someone thought he was a good choice is beyond me. How could you have the guy do such a poor job at times and not even demand that he do it over?
Toki o kakeru shôjo (2006)
it's overrated
This film is very good don't get me wrong but this film is not in the anime hall of fame as so many say. I've seen so many films better than this one that I find it incredible that so many people value this film so highly. The artwork is great but not nearly as good as underrated films such as Journey to Agartha (Children Who Chase Lost Voices), Patema Inverted, Paprika, and even Coraline. I think this film is way overrated and that ultimately unless you relate to the teenage love story its really just not that great of a film. I love how people compare all other animes to movies like this that aren't twice as good as half the others out there. Basically.....this film is pretty darn good but worse than half the other anime films out there even though it is praised as one of the best. Even Summer Wars is much better than this film. And that film is not nearly as highly reviewed and not that good itself but I watched both back to back. I actually think this film is best skipped if you have a real good anime waiting to be watched. Extremely overrated but still good. Quiet better than anything you will see in American animation half the time.
Steppenwolf (1974)
Some good and bad.
This movie communicates only bits and pieces of what the book itself does. It doesn't show well the actual character of Haller at all and, not understanding his personality well, the rest of the film doesn't pass on the original message very well except through occasional one line sum-ups of an idea by a character. This movie includes tons of lines taken directly from the book but I found that the movie uses some of the weaker lines at times while leaving out most of the best. I found the first half of this movie to be utterly boring however the second half was moderately well done. I like the feel to the second half although I barely made it through the first. That said I give this 5 stars because of the nice surrealism (really psychedelic more than just surreal) and I found the film to be overall very poor considering the material its based. I don't particularly like some of the acting selections either. Overall if you just read this book or ever have for that matter I would say don't watch this film because it leaves me with much less feeling than the book did and really calmed down some of the feelings racing in me for days after reading the book. If you've never read the book I would say watch the film but know that the book is a masterpiece and this film is not. But like I said if your into psychedelic feels to films this has plenty to offer there. All that said I believe my review is biased because of comparing it to the book and had I never read the book some of the ideas presented in the film would have really hit home. But that's not hard to do when your script is pretty much taken directly from the book. I think being disappointed is what I feel. I also particularly dislike the scene with the war against machines where in the book the attorney or whatever he was was (I forget) wasn't treated the same as in the film. I think the last few sentences of Gustav and his conversation in the book really hit at what was being said in that section and that the film didn't.
