Follow That Bird (1985)
Nostalgic
There was a time when I think I was in 3rd-4th grade where I would watch the tape I had this and The Muppet Movie on over and over before I went to school.
I practically grew up watching the movie. I watched it over and over again, quote the movie, and sing the songs (especially "Ain't no road too long", one of the best songs from the movie with "One Little Star") A few months ago, I was exploring Wikipedia and for the heck of it, I looked up "Follow that Bird" and figured "What the heck" and dug out my old VCR tape with the movie on it, made up some dinner, sat down, and watched it.
This movie almost made a 20 year old girl cry. I felt sorry for poor Big Bird being convinced by Miss Finch into living with the Dodo's and leaving all of his friends, including his bestest friend Snuffy. Being older than I was the last time I saw the movie, I caught onto a hidden message and the moral of the story about racism and sometimes someone can be more happier living with people that aren't the same in shape, color, race, or species. (Check it on the Follow that Bird Wikipedia page) Maria said it best when she told Miss Finch at the end that everyone is happy and there are a lot of different characters living on Sesame Street: People, Kids, Cows, Dogs, Birds, "Bert and Ernie", Monsters, Honkers and Grouches.
The one scene that really gets to me, besides the whole "Blue Bird of Happiness" scene is at the end when Big Bird returns to his nest and reunites with Snuffy, who he asked to watch over his nest. Such a sweet scene, especially when Big Bird, while hugging his friend, sighs "Home at Last".
One of my favorite Childhood movies and one I was lucky enough to get on DVD for X-Mas.
Snoopy Come Home (1972)
One of the Best of the Peanuts movies/Specials
Ever since I was a tiny little girl, I grew up on Peanuts comic strips and cartoons. I collected the little figurines and have several Snoopy dolls, including the Snoopy Doghouse where many of my old dolls are being held in. Out of all the specials, cartoon episodes, and movies, this one has to be my all time favorites as it is my old brother's favorite.
I don't know why I love it, but it is a very well done movie. Charlie Brown states that Snoopy is lazy and "everything (Snoopy) has is because of (Charlie)". Snoopy tries to cool off at the beach and at the Library with Chuck and Sally, but gets booted out because he's a dog. He gets into a blanket war with Linus, breaks a date on the beach with Peppermint Patty because of the "No Dogs allowed" signs and boxes with Lucy to cool off.
Suddenly, he receives a letter from Lila, his first owner, who tells him she is in the hospital and wants him to visit her. A shocked and obviously upset Snoopy packs up, calls for Woodstock (Who makes his first appearance in the animated continued here) and heads off to meet up with her, leaving a very confused Charlie Brown holding Lila's letter.
After lots of traveling, including an encounter with a crazy girl who tries to adopt Snoopy and Woodstock as her own pets and more of the "No Dogs Aloowed" signs, he arrives at the hospital and his presence makes Lila better. Meanwhile, Charlie Brown and the gang are worried and concerned about why Snoopy left until Linus discovers Snoopy and Lila's past connection and tells Charlie Brown about it.
Snoopy leaves the hospital, but promises that he is going to return to live with Lila. He returns home and alerts everyone, starting with Charlie Brown, that he is going to return to Lila, who, he says in a typed letter, needs him. A farewell party is held and Snoopy receives a fond farewell and a ton of gifts before he leaves a emotionally distraught Charlie Brown and crying little Woodstock behind. But does he stay with Lila for good? You just got to watch the end to find out.
This movie made me laugh, cry and get up and dance. It has many good points like the music and Snoopy's adventures in the wild. Even now I still get choked up at the farewell party and Chuck's sad song when Snoopy leaves home. I actually had to stop my tape once when that scene came up because I was crying so much. I laugh at all of the funny scenes like the re-occurring "No Dogs allowed" signs that appear every now and then. I still dance a bit to the scene when Snoopy and Woodstock have a little concert while they set up camp and make dinner and YES! Snoopy plays the Jaw-harp during the music break, which I love so much. "Lila's Song" and "It Changes(Charlie Brown's sad song)" are moving, "Geting it together", "Snoopy Come Home" and "We're the best of buddies (Me and You)" are fun and up beat and "At the Beach", "Fundimetally (The weird girls' song she sings to 'Rex')" and "No Dog's Allowed" are OK, but not one of my favorites.
The only part I don't like that much is the scene with the girl that "Adopts" Snoopy and Woodstock, calls Snoopy "Rex" and stats that she'll feed him table scraps, forces him to have a tea party with her, spanks him for "spilling" tea on his "Dress", chokes him with a rope leash and drags him to a vet! This is one of the best Peanuts Movies/Specials in my opinion. It has humor, emotion, music, and great music.
"You know what I need? I need more 'hello's'." - Charlie Brown
What's Opera, Doc? (1957)
Kill the Wabbit!
(contains spoilers) "Kill the Wabbit! Kill the Wabbit! Kill the Wabbit!" Still one of the funniest line ever from one of the funniest shorts ever. Ever since I was little, I would quote from this short and watch it over and over again on a tape I had of several shorts.
I always loved the Bounhilda scene where Elmer sang to her on the stairway. Elmer isn't a bad singer, and Bugs just steals the show with his humor.
The scene that always gets to me is when Elmer thinks that he did "kill the wabbit" and walks off into the distance, carrying the "Poor little wabbit" while crying...
and Bugs awakens and remarks to the audience "Well, what did you expect in a opera: a happy ending?", showing us fans that he is alright and that the chase will still continue.
A classic comedy with great music. 10/10
Rabbit of Seville (1950)
One of the best Bugs Bunny shorts...
This is one of the Best Bugs Bunny shorts that I've seen.
The whole story of Bugs escaping Elmer through the opera "Barber of Seville" is pure genius. The whole short is filled with great music and funny scenes.
and yes, Bugs DOES go in drag in it for a little bit and Elmer DOES wear a wedding dress near the end, but it is tastefully done with humor.
I also crack up at the beard shaving scene and Bugs putting all of the stuff on Elmers scalp so that he grows hair. Then Elmer actually grows hair... which turns into flowers because of Bugs being funny. Then the chase goes back one.
This is a short that I love along with "What's Opera, Doc" and "All This and Rabbit Stew" (which isn't shown anymore because of it's racial stereotype of black people.) and it deserves a 10/10 rating.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Not as good as the others... (some spoilers)
My older brother and I Love the Indiana Jones trilogy. We have seen all three movies many times. Heck, we even have three copies of Last Crusade.
"Temple of Doom" was good, but not as great as Raiders and Last Crusade. Mostly because of the violence in it. Especially the treatment of the slaves and Mola Ram taking out hearts and things made me flinch badly. Also, seeing the children as slaves almost made me lower my rating of the movie.
But I still love the small homage to Raiders and Star wars near the end of the movie. Also, Willie was pretty funny and Indy's frustration with her, especially the campfire scene.
"Willie! We are GOING to DIE!" - favorite Indy line from the movie.
Rating: 7/10
