From Zero to I Love You (2019)
Dubbed?
The acting in this film was so bad I truly thought it could be a foreign film that was dubbed. Even though I knew from the description that it was placed in Philadelphia, I still had to check to see if it was dubbed. I only got through the first five minutes before I had to give up. After reading reviews about how great the movie was and even comments on how fantastic the acting was I tried to watch those five minutes again...it was more painful the second time through.
Since the first five minutes focused on mostly one of main characters, I didn't have a chance to see the other actor, but I can't imagine he would've been able to carry the entire film and make up for the rest of this bad acting and production.
I only gave it a 3 rating instead of 1 star, because perhaps the story was good; I just couldn't watch it long enough to fairly rate the movie and it's entirety.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
True Horror Story: Killed Live Animals and Bought Human Corpses
I've been hearing about this movie for most of my life, so I finally gave in and watched it. I expected it to be brutal movie abt the Vietnam War but other than that didn't really know that much about it.
It was pretty much what I expected. A lot of hype, violence and gore. One of those movies that people watch so they can mindlessly agree with popular opinion that this is a groundbreaking film. The storyline was not that interesting or complex and the ending was very anticlimactic.
Couldn't watch the scene of them brutally killing that water buffalo and was horrified when I found out they actually killed a live animal for the scene.
The backstory with all the challenges they were faced with while trying to make this movie was the more interesting than the movie. It's a bigger horror story and shows how far Hollywood will go make money. This movie is only a few steps away from being a snuff film.
Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee (2022)
Dumpster Fire
This is not one of those documentaries that if you just stick with it, will eventually makes sense or get better.
It's just a bunch of crap footage they quickly patched together without putting in enough effort to make it flow logically. It's hard to believe that the majority of footage used was shot by a professional. It was way too long for the very narrow focus they presented. The snippets of the ghostwriter were interesting, but completely out of place. He probably wasn't too happy to see the end product he contributed to.
The final scene with the girlfriend was just insulting to the audience. Then again, for those of us dumb enough to sit through the entire thing we probably deserved it.
Done correctly, this could've been an interesting and entertaining documentary.
Unprecedented (2022)
An Idiot's Guide to Creating a Cult
This was a surprisingly unremarkable.
If you've followed the congressional hearings, this will likely be a waste of
your time. I found the 3rd episode interesting, in a terrifying way. It's always shocking to see how devoted and brainwashed his followers are. The filmmaker captured great footage of the insurrectionists I hadn't seen before, showing the level of adoration and worship they had for that sick man. It didn't even take intelligence or charisma to manipulate his victims. It just took an unhinged narcissistic man with a platform and loudmouth to continue to repeat the same debunked lie over and over again. Well, that and an entire team of enablers who are just as guilty as he is, if not more so.
I rated it a 7 because of episode 3 and because the Trumpists are going to rate it a 1 w/o watching it, and I think it has value if you haven't been staying up to date with the hearings. I'm assuming we'll see more of the footage at some point; hopefully during his criminal trial(s).
Civil: Ben Crump (2022)
With all the Low Rating I Knew it was Going to be an Important Documentary!
As I'm writing this, the rating is a 5.2, however there is not one negative review. That tells me that the low ratings are probably from people who didn't watch it, but saw scary words like "Civil, BLM, or George Floyd," and rated it a 1, because....that's what they do. Wouldn't want to risk making a white person, especially kids, feel a little discomfort by exposing them to the truth, right? They may realize how America's past created and still relies on systemic racism. Yes; if you voted for Trump or are still backing Trumpist Politicians, I'm referring to you. BTW, I'm a middle-aged white american woman.
If others had rated it fairly, I would've rated it an 8 instead of a 10. It was interesting, and for all that Mr. Crump has done, his name should be better known. I didn't know anything about him and I think the documentary could've done a better job of pointed out the overall significance of the court cases he was involved with. Perhaps they realized that their target audience would understand the context of events, as I did. It's also a possibility that he had some influence on the the documentary and if he's as humble as how he appeared, he may have wanted his accomplishments downplayed.
2000 Mules (2022)
Spoiler Alert: Still Zero Evidence.
C'mon, people. I watched this hoping there would be something...anything that would give me some reason to think there was even a .000000009% chance that something sketchy was going on outside of QAnon/Trump World.
Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I don't get it. Cult leaders are usually charismatic. Trump? Gross. Also somewhat smart or strategic. Trump? Mentally ill. Yet he has still managed to gain control over ppl who claim to be conservative and Christian, even though he's proven he's clearly not. And followers who aren't wealthy? The film shows very clearly how he's manipulating you.
Jimmy Carr: His Dark Material (2021)
Low Level
Started off with basic COVID jokes that were ok, but lacked originality. Not even 4 mins in and he started making fat jokes. At that point I turned it off. Not only do I not find humor in fat jokes, I realized his style is low level gutter humor filled with quick punchlines. I prefer smart humor.
The 13th Step (2016)
Anti-AA Propaganda Material with No Objectivity, "Expert" Opinions from a HS Kid and Heavy on Misdirected Blame
Wow. This was filled with so much misdirected hatred to the point of goofiness that it was hard to get through. Thanks for enlightening us that addiction is not truly a disease, by the way. I'm sure the medical community will be fascinated with that news. I agree that AA isn't the right model for everyone, however, blaming the organization instead of the rehab facilities that happened to use the model or the justice system that required dangerous people to attend 12 step meetings doesn't make sense. Since no actual facts were presented, you relied on anecdotal accounts; and I empathize with these women for the horrendous experiences they went through. Claiming that part of AA's traditions (or secret rules as they were referred to) forced women to put themselves in dangerous situations or prevented them from going to the police afterward--again, just not true.
If you're collecting negative documentaries on 12 Step Recovery, there are many legitimate ones out there. I wouldn't recommend adding this one to your library; if anything, it will have the opposite effect.
