The Boondocks (2005)
This show is funny and deep
First, I must say the animation is superb! "The Boondocks" is kind of like "The Simpsons" for black people. The very first scene in the first episode is a to-be-classic. The Protagonist, Huey, is one of the most likable characters I've seen on TV for a long time. Like Lisa from "The Simpsons", He's the one who makes most sense in the show. His little Brother, Riley, is a crack up. The show concentrates mostly on black culture. It's critical of how afro-Americans treat each other and are extremely critical of gangster rap culture. It talks about how black people are threaded in courtrooms. Some episodes have a sad feeling to them, but the show still has "satirical humour" written all over it. Even if the shows is really talking to black people and not the white, I do think every one can enjoy it just the same.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Can't stop thinking about it
I went to see this a few months ago. I was fairly exited to see it, since Ang Lee was the director. (One of the good ones, in my opinion). I was the youngest person in the movie theater, but lost all interest in the fact as soon as the movie started. The movie captured me at once, from the every first minute till the last. The film was like a beautiful, slow dance. My eyes refused to even blink, it was so pleased with the beautiful photographing of nature, cities and people. The acting blew my mind! Jake Gyllenhaal was a playful, wild but sweet rodeo-guy. Heath Ledger hands down won the whole movie as his role as the quick guy with a deep inner pain. The story was heart breaking. It was a beautiful love story about fear, confusion and hopelessness. The love-couple knew what would make them happy, but it was too frightening, to odd, that they refused to do it, they just couldn't accept what would make them happy, so it was just a affair full of despair. And that, my friends, was painful to watch. That's what struck right through me. I left the movie theater amazed, and my head filled with thoughts. Till this day I can't stop thinking about it. In my opinion, this might be one of the best movies of the year of 2005. I was talking to someone my own age just yesterday, and told her it's one of the best recently made movies. Jake Gyllenhaal has done spectacular work before! I recommend you to watch this movie, along with "Donnie Darko". I give this movie 4 stars out of 5, but the whole film is, to be honest, 5-star-aqulety. Go see it if you like movies and films, in other words, a cinematic!
Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964)
Unusual, romantic and realistic (Spoilers)
"The umbrellas of Cheurborg" is an very unusual musical. They're is no dancing or talking. I enjoyed the singing and melody.I think it's interesting that they never stop singing, because it probably is fairly difficult and needs a lot of talent. And that's what they indeed have! The singing becomes so natural, that you even stop thinking about it! I was surprised to hear someone talk after the movie. Also, the colors are extremely bright. Especially the pink wallpapers in the heroines house and her green dress she wears in the beginning. It's also interesting how it starts with the hero, then switches to the heroine, and ends with the hero. Catherine Deneuve has a charming charisma, and is a real treasure. She and Nino Castelnuovo have a nice chemistry, which makes the film successful in the romantic elements. The heroine's mother is a typical way of portraying parents in films, but Anne Vernon pulls it of so well that it didn't bother me at all. All characters are believable and even the end is realistic. I won't tell you how it ends, but believe me, it ain't no stupid Hollywood ending! Everyone I know have dedated whether the endings sad or not- personally I don't think so. I have to also say, the translation is perfect! I have come across a few fairly awful ones, so it was a pleasant surprise to see that they had really tried with this one. The directer, Jacques Demy, impressed me with his brilliant, superb, moving writings and directions. He has created one of the most beautiful love stories. And I just don't like any romance stories, so believe me, this one works perfectly! It's also one of the most spectacular musicals. It a movie everyone should see, from youngsters to adults.
The Matrix (1999)
Plato's Computer
I must confess, the first time I saw this movie I didn't like it at all. But then a year later I realized how clever and superb it was! The reason for this was that it is very confusing. That's part of the beauty: in the beginning of the movie, you're as confused as the main character, but in the end everything becomes clear. The story is a reference to the ancient-Greek philosopher Plato, who believed the real world was actually a cave, and that the world we lived in was a dream. In "The Matrix", they say the world we live in is just a dream, a computer, that the machines have programmed for us. The villain in the movie is just so deliciously creepy! He talks extremely slowly that it sends cold chills down your spine. This role is played by Hugo Weaving. Bravo, Weaving! Another character I rather liked was Trinity, a tough kung-fu fighting girl who has an extremely cool introduction. She is played by Carrie-Ann Moss. The movie has some religious themes and classic, possible one of the best, special features ever done in film history. If you are easily offended by sci-fi violence, I would recommend that you skip this movie. But in other cases, I say put it on your list and invite some friends! You might be interested in the other two, but personally I was let down by them. They should have never been made! Welcome to Sci-fi!
Brazil (1985)
Furiously FUNNY!
Man, I thought I would never ever laugh at a flashiest government, but GAAH! I was laughing my head off like crazy while watching this brilliant work of cinema. Sam, the head character, is very well adapted as he struggles to survive in the crazy world. His mother reminds me of my classmates: just thinking about boys and looking good. The Dinner scene I could frightfully relate to: having to sit there and listen to pointless conversation. I also found the almost last scene difficult to watch. Terri Gillian is a great movie-maker; he also impressed me with "Time Bandits". The title of the movie is token from the theme song. The ministry of truth is definitely a reference to George Orwell's "1984". 9/10
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
This movie puts the "Com" in Comedy!
Okay! So I'm a girl. But I still love this movie! I've seen this movie three times and it just gets better every time I see it. I enjoy the characters, because there all SO crazy. I literally could not stop laughing! But this movie isn't only a comedy, but also a very tragic and scary story. It's about politest going wrong and all hell breaking loose in the army. And the relationship- ah, the relationship between the president of U.S.A and Russia (in those days) Is so realistic! It's so realistic in this movie that it's scary! This movie is so good, I wish it could have won that Oscar for "Best movie". If this movie didn't win, I'll like to know what did, thank you! This movie is no doubt one of Stanley Kubricks finest films!
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Best Star wars movie yet!
Even if I loved the old Star Wars movie, I couldn't help but to enjoy this one better. It was so incredible tragic! And it had such a horrific "love story", that I was about to scream. luckily the good old robots R2D2 and C3PO we're still as funny as usual. Obi-wan's and Anakin's friendship was played out perfectly. I think Ewan McGregor did the best performance in the whole movie. Hayden Chirstensen was so bad himself, especially at the end of the movie. Padme (Natalie Portman) had the best costumes. The special effects we're totally cool and nicely done. If you would like to see the star wars movies, I would recommend you to watch THE OLD ONES first, and then the new ones. (Even if this ones the only new one that's good). I give this 5/5
