Interstellar (2014)
A movie that you should experience
I have never reviewed a movie on this site before seeing Interstellar, but I felt so strongly about this film that I had to write something.
Interstellar is hands down one of the greatest movies I have ever experienced. If you have the chance watch it in theaters, you shouldn't pass up the opportunity. You will not be disappointed.
Everything about Interstellar is spot on. The story is great. Some people will complain that the "dust storms" that are destroying Earth are not on a grand enough scale to be detrimental to the survival of the planet, but I think that they do a decent job of setting the scene. The movie is set seemingly somewhere in the mid-west, somewhere close enough to stumble upon NORAD. Its not only the dust storms in the mid-west, but its the food shortages and decreasing populations and resources around the world that are causing all of the problems. I really thought that these early scenes did a good job setting the scene and the dire implications of the movie. This also sets the emotional aspect of the movie. The scene where Cooper is driving away from his family, especially from Murph, is extremely heartbreaking and you get to see how difficult this decision to join the mission is for Cooper.
After the team leaves earth, the movie really lifts off. From here on out the visuals are some of the most amazing and awe inspiring I have ever seen in a film. The scene where the expedition is first entering the wormhole is everything I could have imagined, and more. We get to see the vastness of space perfectly portrayed on a movie screen. I also personally enjoyed the scenes where the black hole provided a slightly ominous backdrop the the action. Each planet, while simple, were very enjoyable and interesting.
The acting in Interstellar was one of its best assets. I was not a huge fan of McConaughey before seeing how he portrayed the role of fearless pilot, but also loving father. Anne Hathaway was also very enjoyable as brilliant, yet slightly naive Dr. Brand. With a supporting cast with the likes of Casey Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine and Wes Bentley, the acting was very solid. The robot TARS also added a level of humor to an otherwise melancholy film.
The ending was a little strange, and I know some people were not very happy with it, but i think it was a good, creative way to tie the entire film together. To show the representation of time as a physical dimension while in the black hole, I thought was a nice touch and to have it relate to the "ghost" in Murphs room was very creative. This kind of space-time science is very high brow anyway, so whose to say that this can't happen. Plus, its a movie, its supposed to be entertaining and creative, so why not go for it. Im just glad he didn't end it with random aliens like a lot of other directors like to do.
Overall, this film was a complete triumph. Its not perfect, but what movie is. Its fun, serious, has breathtaking visuals and will leave you wondering.
