Wolf Lake: Unaired Pilot (2001)
Very Creepy
The show was spectacular... Every single character had charisma, every episode was worth re-watching, again, and again. I would love to see it out on DVD. My videos of the airings have become sadly fuzzy. On one of my favorite episodes, the sound is going crunchy. Why is this not on DVD yet?! The two things I liked best about the series, were, first- the Actors they choose, and how they interacted with one another, how almost every one of them was lovable in some fashion, even the super villains, and secondly- the way it was shot. They are able to communicate, with visuals, what is happening in/to the mind of the person you are seeing. Usually directors cop-out on this point, and show you what the person they want you to empathize with is looking at. In Wolf lake, they do this a couple of times, but in a number of key scenes, you are looking at a person experiencing something, and you understand what they are feeling, what they are going thru, because of the way the screen displays the inner mind. This is difficult to explain, but I think, is the best reason I loved this show.
Immortel (ad vitam) (2004)
Unexpected
This movie was, unexpected. My brother rented it and left it at my place, so I watched it. And then I watched it again. And in the spaces between, I thought about it. My only complaint was the inconsistency of the computer animation. Some of the animated characters were wonderfully done. Obviously they were animated, but it hardly mattered. They looked like they had stepped out of the pages of a 'graphic novel' (to use another person's words.) On the other hand, a few were regretfully plastic looking - like an oddly formed Barbie doll. What is more amusing is that wherever the main characters interact with the Barbie characters, the doll characters become more impressive, and less of a distraction. I used the forward button quite a bit, but only for small bits at a time. The annoying parts were scattered thru the film, but they mostly had to do with lining up the plot, not the drama of the story. The backgrounds were all incredible. All of the scenes with Nikopol or Jill were generally spooky and spectacular. It was as if the rest of the characters in the movie were created at cut rates, just so those two would have an arena to interrelate. Which they did formidably.
