Hope Street (2020)
The Doc Martin formula with added crime - but...
I'll be honest, this really isn't a very good show. It's pretty 'meh', actually. Someone in TV worked out that showing beautiful scenery with pretty inoffensive drama and varying levels of acting skills can get pretty good ratings.
I've added two points in my rating for easy viewing and scenery.* And I guess because everything else on TV is so utterly dreadful, depressing or unrealistic.
Not that this show is realistic, extremely well-written or acted. It really isn't. Yet, somehow, it wins you over. Maybe it's the accents?!
*Also, no dogs! Usually, these kind of shows have a 'cute' dog in them. ..
Men in Trees (2006)
Surprisingly delightful!
I watched a few episodes of this show years ago but gave it another go now. Glad to say I did. Overall, the wit of Frasier with the heart of a romance novel. Sad season 2 was seemingly wrapped in, well, wrapping it all up. Wish there were more episodes/ seasons. Had S2 been different, i.e. The show allowed to run a longer course, it'd have been better. Without spoilers, S2 is when you really have to let any reality checks go. Still, especially compared to what's out there today, this is an utterly delightful show that doesn't talk down to viewers, with a great cast!
The Capture (2019)
Really enjoyable
Expectations were medium, coming in from the BBC page - with the ill-advised BBC3 stuff also in 'recommended', I was rather doubtful on this. Seeing H. Grainger featuring, I expected more, and wasn't disappointed. The BBC might get a lot of things wrong (mainly anything on BBC3, or any money spent on 'celebs' -e.g. Katie Price), but it also gets many things right This drama is one of those. That's when everyone says 'ah, the Beeb did it again!' i.e. Well done, yet nobody shouts about it as they do when the 'Beeb' get it (so very, VERY) wrong.
Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies and the Internet (2022)
Like 99% of all Netflix 'documentaries' it was dragged out....
Like 99% of all Netflix 'documentaries' it was dragged out and poorly done in the first place, yet still lacked in any substance.
E2 is heart-breaking, and more so as (typical with Netflix) it has no real conclusion.
E3 particularly is annoying with the fake right-wing main protagonist ('Samantha'), pretending she was infiltrating a group, when she was clearly not until found out. If you're looking for fake news, she's it!!
Didn't bother with the rest, as with all 'documentary' Netflix: either too long, too boring or too shallow. Or a mix of all, with added fakeness.
The only good things on Netflix are the things they've already cancelled.
Virgin River (2019)
Ok if you're wine-wasted & hormonal, otherwise it's quite painful, really.
I'd say I'd like to know in what world this currently has 7.4 star rating, when actually good TV like Better Call Saul, or the original Pride & Prejudice (similar audience) have only slightly higher ratings. I was expecting something around the 5. Mark, and that'd be ok. I know this show is based on books. I tried them.* They're almost as awful as this show, though this show actually improved on the books. This is the same 'quality' content as the time-travelling 'Scottish' thing, with the gay lead. Only with US contemporary scenery. Scenery is lovely, makes me want to move there. The acting is dire, the script is painful. Imagine a 12 year old girl high on her first crush vomiting out a script of obvious choice plot or nonsense and you've got the gist. If you like a bottle of wine or two while menstruating, and generally commiserating how awful life is and couldn't it just be nice, really, while you pass out to utterly idle and inane dialogue - this is the show. If (July 2022) you're still subscribed to Netflix because of their content, your IQ and taste are obviously sub-standard, so really, you deserve this low quality drivel.
*I cannot stress how utterly awful the books are! This show is Oscar-worthy in comparison. Hence the 3 stars.
Frasier (1993)
Near d*mn perfect!
If ever there was a show that came close to being perfect, this is it. I've watched and re-watched this show and I still enjoy it and find things I've missed previously.
Some of the later seasons are a bit boring; I'd really recommend S1-S6, esp. S6 is amazing.
This show is clever, doesn't talk down to the viewer, is heart-felt, caring, funny, witty and loving. I wish there were more shows like this!
A.P. Bio (2018)
It started off as a 10...
...then sadly went downhill quite quickly. The mediocre storylines couldn't be carried even by the great staff of actors. Once this was axed, it should have stayed axed, it was way beyond saving - sadly! This could have been < much better show! Patton Oswalt lead the campaign to prolong this show but his character is one of the reasons it became stale and unwatchable in the first place. I wish this show had taken a different direction, as it was great in S1, then just dived.
Mum (2016)
'Mum' is great
This show is real, heartwarming, sad, gut-wrenching yet overall 'good', and. Above all, very close to real life. The actors are great, the story is very relatable and it's one of those rare shows that's both an easy watch yet some depth.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Surprisingly good!
This show is, despite Selena Gomez' monotone voice and lack of acting abilities, surprisingly good. The plot and story line are enjoyable, it's fun. This isn't brain-teasing stuff, it's simple, easy, wholesome entertainment but there's too little of that nowadays.
Yes, it's carried by Steve and Martin (hah hah), and would be better if it featured more Steve Martin. Or Martin short funny skits. Ideally, both. Or just less monotone, dreary moments featuring Gomez. Surely they could have found a skilled actress to act in this?!? Rr.
Resident Alien (2021)
First season vs second....
The first season of this was one of the absolute best moments of TV in the last decade. It was near perfect. The story, the actors, the characters, the soundtrack, it'd be hard to find anything wrong! I recommended this to everyone I know, and. Most people asked why I even liked this as I loathe sci-fi. Well, appreciated it all despite hating sci-fi, which means a lot! Really, S1 was one of the most inspired, clever, inclusive, witty etc etc. Shows I've seen. I was really counting down to S2.
Then S2 happened.
I didn't even make it past Ep 4(?- in NY, it's preposterous, even for a sort of Sci-Fi show!, his daughter's skeleton is there and she'd died, yadiya pizza place shenanigans?! I can look way past some of the utterly shoddy green-screen stuff for a good show but it stopped making sense, being clever, witty, interesting....) If the best thing I can say about a show's season is that N Fillion voiced a fake octopus well, it can't mean much.
I wish S2 had never happened.
Somebody Somewhere (2022)
Fantastic!
This show is truly fantastic! I wish the episodes were longer though they're great the way they are - I just need more! One of those rare shows that is real and shows life as it is - full of love, hate, loathing, liking, kindred spirits, enemies, life going ok, life going wrong,... it's a pleasure to watch this. The actors and acting are amazing, which really helps 'sell' this.
