Logan's Run (1976)
This movie is more prophetic than science fiction today!
I watched Logan's Run this week for the first time in years. I was by myself, watching on a 6' by 10' screen. Tonight I watched it again, just two days later, but this time with a friend who had never seen the movie before. Given the politics of today, and the recent events, especially the insurrection of January 6th and the former president still spreading his lies, so many things stood out in this movie today that were more or less irrelevant on previous viewings! The very premise of their existence in the dome was caused by events that we might be living through today. The life clocks in their palms are similar to what states and now the SCOTUS is forcing women through by controlling what they can and can't do with their bodies. The fact that society was totally ruled by a computer system with no back-up control, a system that when faced with an alternative set of facts blew up! People such as Francis 7 who, despite seeing the reality that existed on the outside, still hung on to the beliefs that were burned into his being - the lies handed down by the system in order to control the people. The other thing that stood out tonight was how wonderful the special effects were, in a time long before CGI. In fact, my friend had no idea that it was released in 1976, and was amazed at how it didn't seem dated at all. If you've never seen this movie, or if you haven't watched in the past couple of years, I highly recommend that you watch it again! You won't be sorry.
Lovestruck High (2022)
My Guilty Pleasure
I have to confess that I found this series to be quite enjoyable overall, but very confusing at the same time! An American series, set in the UK, with British people in their 20s, going to high school...with very British looking surroundings, but American clothing, American pictures in the diner, American prices in $$$ at the diner, a school bus that was driving on the wrong side of the road for being in the UK - but an absolutely delicious mixture of talents and personalities and some beautiful boys!!! And, of course, bitchy queens and lots of variations on the Kinsey scale. Hoping there is a season 2!
Death on the Nile (2022)
Boring!
I can usually find something of value in a movie, but not in this one! I was so bored throughout the entire movie! I couldn't stand Poirot's accent, there was no interest for me in who did what or why? I just couldn't wait for it to be over!
I Carry You with Me (2020)
So much to learn from this movie!
There are so many layers to this storyline that I will have to watch it several more times to really appreciate the true beauty of it. Had I known at the time that I was watching it, that it was based on a true story, it would have had an even stronger impact on me. We see what it is like to be a gay person growing up in an environment where being gay or being different is not accepted. We see the poverty and the nearly impossible conditions that exist in the town where the main character is living, and how impossible it will be to achieve his dreams. We witness the impossible decision that has to be made - to support a family, to stay with a lover or leave it all behind to follow your hopes and dreams. We see how difficult it is to escape the country in much more detail than we ever see on the news in this country. And we see how difficult life can be once they arrive in the country of their dreams - trapped forever by the system and the racism that exists. We also see that the title of the film is in itself, multi-layered. I could have watched this story unfold for another couple of hours - it was just that emotional and beautifully told.
Forgotten Tragedy: The Story of the St. Francis Dam (2018)
Interesting story - poorly made documentary
I was fascinated by the story - a story that I had never heard before. I was anxious to learn all about it! But I couldn't force myself to finish watching it. I've never seen such a poorly constructed documentary in my life! Scene after scene used the same footage or photograph at least 6 times! The same information in the narrative was repeated multiple times. The narrator was speaking so fast and giving out so much information that one just felt like he was drowning in a deluge of information. Was there a lack of photos and archival footage that could be used? Probably, but then the narrative should have been edited to fit with what was available, or commissioned sketches or anything else would have been a better use than to just repeating the same images over and over. I usually love documentaries, but I have to take a pass on this one.
At the Drive-In (2017)
Two years later and I'm still blown away!
I first saw this documentary 2 years ago at the Omaha Film Festival, on a big screen, in a huge theater, with a festival crowd. I was blown away. Tonight, two years later, I watched it again for only the second time, at home, on my 46" screen, with 2 of my neighbors, and we were ALL blown away - AGAIN! That is an incredible film that can have that same effect after all this time! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!!!
