Enterprise: Twilight (2003)
One of the Best episodes of the series
"Twilight" is without a doubt one of the best episodes of Enterprise. It is an engaging story that is wonderfully directed by Robert Duncan McNeill of Star Trek Voyager fame.
The plot deals with an anomaly hitting Enterprise and knocking Archer unconscious while at the same time infecting him with some kind of parasite. While at first it might seem like a relatively simple plot for an episode the writers take this idea and effectively turn it into some sort of alternate future where Archer's mission to stop the Xindi fails. It is very interesting to see how a relatively small idea can be expanded into a really ambitious episode. It is basically a story with heart, guts and a really big punch. The writers did their job well for this episode.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
Nemesis is not Star Trek
I am pretty sure that Gene Rodenberry wasn't expecting something like Nemesis to thrash his Franchise of exploration, human relations, friendship and growth. I despise both Berman and Braga for completely disregarding the true themes of Star Trek and this disregard and disrespect makes itself even more obvious in Nemesis. Star Trek is not about action, action is a part of it but its not the main aspect of Trek. Star Trek gives us an hopeful, optimistic view of our future and shows both the merits and the dangers of space travel. I cannot accept how Nemesis disregards even the smallest aspects of Trek. The film turned Trek into a shoot em up, action flick with no message or a theme of exploration. Now in its own as a separate film it might have been good but Nemesis is not Star Trek and is a big insult to it. I am also amazed at the actors for deviating so much from their original characters, it was like we were watching a different crew than the one we loved (where is our old Picard). Not to mention the fact that the film contains more plot holes and continuity issues than any of the ones before it. This is Star Trek at its worst and personally I am ashamed to call this film Star Trek because it is not Star Trek.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
An Epic of the Middle Earth
It was a big talk back in 2001 when it was told that J.R.R Tolkien's masterpiece, Lord of the Rings trilogy will be made into a live action movie. Most people considered this to be impossible except one ambitious filmmaker named Peter Jackson. I was amazed at the spectacle in the theater when I went to the first screening of this film and was awed until the end of it. Okay it was long but I wasn't bored a bit by the grand locales, the action and the characters of the story. It was after watching this movie that I went to a local bookstore and bought J.R.R Tolkien's trilogy on hardcover to read for the first time. I was amazed at director Peter Jackson's ability to capture Tolkiens exact image of the Middle Earth. It was standing there on the silver screen with its mountains, statues, monsters and different species. Although I have seen the other two movies as well, I found this one to be the best among them. It Should have taken more Oscars than it originally took. This was Peter Jacksons entrance into the middle earth and the beginning of an epic journey made possible by the extremely realistic visual effects and New Zealands impressive landscape.
Batman Begins (2005)
Lacking some elements
Batman Begins is overall a good movie but in my opinion it lacks some aspects. First of all the acting and the hallucination effects were good but I didn't like the depiction of Gotham City in the movie. Gotham city was a bit too realistic, I always pictured it as a fantastic, Gothic City not something similar to New York. Also there seemed to be some plot holes as at the end of the movie we don't know what happened to the people who contracted the virus. We don't see whether they managed to effectively mass produce the antidote and the faith of the people of Gotham. The bit in the end about Joker was also a good transition into the original Tim Burton movie. The movie should have had more fantastical elements but director Nolan seems to have taken a more realistic approach to the theme of superhero. Overall in my opinion it could have been better: 6/10
