Doom Eternal (2020)
Average and weak at times
Despite being the first Doom game to be more narrative driven than just shooting and killing, other than Doom RPG, it's one of the worst Doom games, neck and neck with 3. The game features uninspired level designs where every city other than the metropolis' you go to have the same pseudo futuristic renaissance era cathedral like buildings which makes this journey fall flat for me. The narrative, which ties back to the classic Doom games I know and love, was what kept me going, but it got to the point where everyone does the talking, be it the Makyrs, Vega or Samuel Hayden and the gameplay wasn't complementing it, nor was the Slayer himself. It was a simple shoot em up game where they'd make a big deal about a certain boss fight and then chucking that same boss to cap off every other fight, making it all feel so repetitive. Not to mention, every level feels like you go up a flight of stairs and go into combat, go up more stairs and have some more combat, repeat and repeat and repeat until oh we're at the end. This style of gaming would have been good 20 years ago but not here. The gameplay itself, while fun, grows stale quickly. The demons now have weak points which make it a sort of dance to kill them, one that you repeat every time you meet them. Hell, all you have to use is the combat shotgun grenade launcher on the demons weak spots and you're sorted more or less.
The game also features dated cinematics mid game where the screen fades black to show a weird angle of some gate being opened or fading away or a building blowing up to then fade back to the gameplay, something you'd find in a Ratchet & Clank or a movie tie in game, something that feels cheap and dated to me.
The music as well is hugely annoying as I find myself quitting to my home screen so as to not subject myself to that noise any longer. It's as repetitive as the gameplay itself.
It's a shame really as I really love the storyline but the execution of the gameplay is repetitive and really weak. The Fortress of Doom is a nice addition I will say. The deathmatch feels like it was put in there to keep 2016 online alive and to make use of their demon controlling system so as for it not to go to waste.
All in all, the game is mediocre. A step down from 2016s gameplay but a win for s good story, especially in the Doom canonocity. Worth a buy if you want more Doom just don't expect too much from it and then you might enjoy it.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Didn't expect much, didn't get much
Gonna start this of by saying I am a cbm fan and after this was announced I was totally excited to see this character. I wasn't a huge fan of her comics, personally, as I felt they didn't go anywhere but I was excited for how they were going to fit her in. I was lucky enough to get an advanced screening with a mate who works at a local cinema so I had to see it. Unfortunately, it just didn't cut it for me. This is a personal opinion so don't take it as gospel but yeah, it was really lazy. The trailers didn't really excite me to be honest, they didn't look great. So when I sat down to see it I was willing to like it but I wasn't expecting much. The story was very bland and very uninspired. The action was very flashy and polished up but didn't have that level of excitement I'd feel in The Winter Solider or in the warehouse fight scene, they felt too blatantly choreographed and on a further note, the cgi was very bland, making those cg action scenes even worse for me. The cg was very akin to Black Panther or the Justice League reshoots. Or even worse, Ruffalo in the Hulkbuster suit. Very pretty but very plastic. Didn't work. I'm noticing a trend with MCU movies and bad cg recently, especially on Iron Man in IW and CW. Thanos was very well done but in here, nah. Brie Larson tried her best, I can tell, But it didn't work. She didn't feel like she belonged in the role at most parts, especially as a pilot. It felt forced and her delivery just wasn't on point. The practical effects were very boring, imo. Her costume felt like a suit from Legends of Tomorrow. Which are good costumes, but not for a few hundred million dollar movie that's part of a few billion dollar franchise. The skrulls looked very fake, very much like the Dragon Ball movie. Interior sets were very obviously sets. There seems like there was no effort at times, to be honest. The only really stand out part was the end credit scene. You'll have to see it for yourself but yeah it was good. Coulson looked dreadful and he was very forgettable even though I love Coulson and AoS. Fury looked good in most scenes but he didn't look like Sam Jackson in the 90s, he looked liked a 70 year old man trying to be 50 year old man, which is what he is. But for what was possible in that, they did a really good job. So yeah, all in all, story left a lot to be desired, acting was very poor, cgi was not at all good, effect on me in the long run is minimal and I'll pretty much forget about it in a few months. In the long run tho, I'm forever grateful that little girls and grown women have a great role model to grow up with and be inspired by like I had with Batman and Superman. Living in a world where we have Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel on our screens representing women for what they are, strong amazing people, is great. It's just a shame that this, as a movie, didn't work. But it makes my opinion invalid when i see my friends little sister smiling every time she sees her, so it's worth it. That makes me happy.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Fits in with the other films, but doesn't exceed them.
Just a quickie. This film does well to hold up the standard of MCU films up until this points. The Russo Brothers to well to emulate the different feel of each and every character from other films like the Guardians. Most of the characters were pretty useless all in all. Cap did next to nothing, and to think this was meant to be the last film on his contact. There was a ton of action which, at the end, felt like noise. It feels like they pushed to have every single hero here whilst most were unnecessary additions. My main gripe is the deaths: Spoilers for Ant Man 2 btw. I realise that half the population on earth is about 3.5 billion but I think killing off pretty much everyone apart from the original team and Rocket was a bit overkill and convenient. All the Guardians are dead as well and the entire Ant Man team apart from Scott becuase the snap doesn't affect the quantum realm. Even Fury and Hill are gone. It's essentially just a big set up for Avengers 4, which is what annoys me. This film was hyped up for ages and as a fan of comic books and comic book movies in general I was really bloody excited but then it ended up being a huge set up with no real consequences. It's 100% obvious that anyone that turned to dust will be back. Holland is already filming Spiderman Far From Home, all the Guardians are filming Vol. 3, this was pretty much confirmed when Bautista threatened to quit over the Gunn controversy. Jackson and Smulders are filming Far From Home. It was annoying to say the least they these deaths were bigged up when they're all fake. Disney does not like to take risks. Loki dying is a grey area because I don't believe they would kill their most profitable villain and he's died before. Vision I believe is pretty much dead. Gamora is back for Guardians 3 so I'm unsure about her. We're all fairly certain that time travel will be involved in the next Avengers as well and one theory is that Shuri figures out a way to destroy the Infinity gems (yes I say gems because that's what they should be called) because she basically figured it out in IW, they go back in time and destroy all the stones before Thanos can get them which basically means Vision won't be coming back unless some sort of time paradox happens. Either way, the rate of the ones left alive is up in the air ironically. Basically, this film surfs on action and emotion but since the emotion is, for want of a better word, short-lived when you realise nothing sad actually happened, it basically works on action which echoes that of previous films. The emotion was high, despite as short as I felt it, especially Spiderman, but, in my honest opinion, I am going to wait until Avengers 4 to give see if this was a good or bad set up and if this was worth it. I hope it is.
