Beautiful Disaster (2023)
Why do people option the book if they don't want to follow the storyline
It's been years since they announced they had optioned Jamie McGuire's Beautiful Disaster and finally book lovers rejoiced at learning it was happening and they had a chance to watch it in theaters. None the less. I like many, made sure to make time to go watch it as it was only in theaters TWO DAYS. As it was limited, the only people who really knew about it was the book lovers. I decided to go in open minded, as I knew they could not have fit everything from the book into the movie. It started OK but, soon just fell apart. I felt like I was going to a movie developed by a boyfriend that had a listen to his girlfriend explain about this new book she LOVED and he listened but, only caught the fighting, sex, and mafia scenes. There was no relationship development, they cut out or changed characters, and for a college set book they had very little college in it at all. As the movie went they kept merging scenes, adding unnecessary sex scenes/gestures, and adding new unneeded plot twists. The actors, though to old to play college kids, had OK chemistry and could have been so much better if they had kept closer to the original story line. I have no idea how they will follow the ending as the whole premise of the book is shot. I am growing less and less faith that any directors or producers really understand the concept that if you can not follow the majority of the book you have optioned,do the author a favor and leave it alone.
Bridgerton (2020)
Missing the Mark
I was really excited about this show but, it missed the mark for me. I have read the book series numerous times and always loved the family dynamic and witty banter between the characters that Julia Quinn created but, the adapted script made all the characters real stiff, serious,, and unperson-able. Where they mostly stuck to the overall story-line of the first book "The Duke &I" they pulled certain sub plots from future books in the series to early, changed them or gave them way to much run time. The adding of the opera singer(very briefly from book 2) and Marina Thompson( important to Eloise's story in book 5, originally a Bridgerton Cousin) that were barely mentioned till later books and having them as main characters ; made Anthony and Colin unlikable for their future seasons. Adding the dressmaker, Mr. Featherton, and Prince Friedrich (who are not in the books at all) were totally pointless and gave no real substance to the story at all. Changing Ms. Danberry's role as a funny gossip to Queen Charlotte (anther character barely included in the books) was also a let down as she is featured throughout all the books and a very influential to the younger Bridgertons stories and the search for Lady Whistle-down. I hope for future seasons they stick more to the books storyline and not change it to include modern problems that contradict the time period and also bring more of the humor back to the writing and less of the non important sex scenes and unnecessary added side characters.
Anne (2017)
For all Anne of Green Gables Fans: Old, Young,Book Lover, 85'Series Fanatic, and AWAE Newbie
Hear me out!
I have been a dedicated Anne of Green Gables fan ever since I came upon the PBS airing the 85' Mini-series when I was 10 years old. It was my go to. I then went on to read the whole book series and anything L.M. Montgomery. I had to get my Anne ....and Gilbert fix too:) I bought all the Mini series VHS and DVDs and watched it every time I needed a good binge.
When I heard that there were a few new movies and a series that were in the the works..... as a AOGG obsessed person I of course was ecstatic. I got Netflix for that exact reason to watch Anne With An E. Then I finally got to watch season one I was.....slightly disappointed. The first episode was great, but the last 10 minutes of the episode started to veer from the story I knew and continued throughout the season.
The Children's Librarian in me decided to return to my roots and re-read the series. As I had not read the whole series since I was younger, I found as I read, that most of my beloved scenes that I vividly loved in the 85' AOGG series actually, was NOT part of the series, they were changed or were moved around in Anne's timeline. The mini-series ALSO was flawed. As I was going through all the other movie adaptions of the series I found this as well. Not one adaption actually followed the books correctly.
After contemplating this and also learning that those scenes from the 85' mini-series could not redone without legal action being taken on for being to close to Kevin Sullivan's version. I then re-evaluated my look on Anne With An E.
Yes, It is not exactly like the books or the beloved mini-series. It has been adapted with the idea of expanding the background of each character and the time period, while also appealing to a new generation. It does hint at different aspects of race, gender bias, and sexuality that never would have expressed before in the books that may find some christian viewers to dishearten it.
With that said, through it may express some hints of these ideas and lifestyles, it should not be overlooked by anyone and should NOT be put down souly on these ideals. This series is WONDERFULLY WRITTEN, SUPERBLY ACTED, and conveys all the wonderful aspects that make Anne Shirley such an INSPIRING and REMARKABLE HEROINE that continues to impact us even 114 year after AOGG was published.
So in the words of Anne Shirley-Cuthbert "Different isn't bad its just not the same" I impel you keep an open mind and heart for this GREAT adaption of Anne of Green Gables and once again be inspired by this fiery redheaded heroine named Anne with an E.
