Zombie Killers: Elephant's Graveyard (2015)
Oh dear
Engaging horror movies can be made on a low budget. This had a budget and it's terrible. It doesn't challenge the audience or up the ante to where we care about the characters. There was little drama, gore, and horror, all destroying even a little chance of a decent climax. The acting was decent enough throughout.
By the end credits, I was happy that it was over.
It's a rough, choppy watch that somehow makes intersquad paintball seem more interesting than actual zombie fighting. This mentality leads to some atrocious examples of how overused CGI can sink an entire production when done wrong. Who knew that a horror movie could drain all the fun out of mutated zombie animals?
Zombie Undead (2010)
Umm...not good...
This website won't allow me to rate this film zero out of ten, but zero is the score it deserves. Zero budget, zero talent and zero effort by everyone involved.
The zombies don't appear to have any kind of zombie make up at all, which gives you an idea of what the makers of this were thinking. Make something as quickly and cheaply as possible to con the public out of their hard earned cash.
Watching this film is like having excrement thrown in your face for an hour and a half.
No-one on screen has any acting ability - Do something else with your life.
In short, avoid this movie like the zombie plague.
The Apostate (2015)
Great little indie movie!
This one is probably slipping 'under the radar' a little bit. I first heard about 'the Apostate' while reading 'ain't it cool news' where it received deserved praise, and the synopsis was intriguing enough for me to want to see it. Lance Cooper, played brilliantly by James Bryhan, awakes in a room not knowing who he is or how he got there. It shouts of 'SAW' and it does have its similarities, but the two films are very different beasts. He has a cut to one of his legs and is losing blood quickly - so he need to get out. That's the premise. What follows is a series of flashbacks, ranging from his police interview to other events that finally leads us to finale, which is very unexpected. It's low budget fare, but the 'look'is cinematic and the practical FX is very well done. Tight script and it moves along at a pace which never bores. Getting a low budget short made is hard. Getting a low budget feature made is nigh-on impossible. This deserves a wider audience and never falls into the trap of other low-budget movies. I.e. teens in the wood. If you get a chance to see it, you should. It's won't disappoint.
Predestination (2014)
Clever take on the time travel movie...
I'd heard good things about this movie, even if it is a bit of a 'head scratcher' - but, what time-travel movie isn't? It's interesting the way the plot unravels - if you go into the movie not knowing about the story (as I did), there will definitely be some twists you won't expect. I won't go into plot - of course, it's ridiculous, but just enjoy the clever ride. Ethan Hawke is fine, but the real stand-out performer is Sarah Snook - surely a big star of the future? The device they use for time-travel is sorta 'quirky' - probably the last place you'd imagine it to be, but I see the logic in 'hiding' it in an 'everyday' item! I'd recommend this movie, but don't think about it too much else you may fry your brain...
