Rang De Basanti (2006)
Brilliant
A truly brilliant movie. With this movie Indian Cinema takes leaps and bounds forward. It has a very urban flavor. The energy is unmistakable. It brings out some really important lessons. The second half takes you by surprise. The fun and frolic is very realistic. It not too melodramatic or over the top. All the performances are bang on target. Aamir looks a tad bit old for his role. But he more than makes it up with the amazing performance. One more validation on why an Aamir Khan movie is very eagerly awaited. Soha Ali khan is the real revelation of the movie. The music is peppy in the first half and poignant in the second. A R Rahman shows why he is the best. Everybody should go see the movie.
'D' (2005)
An effective movie
Another mafia movie out of the RGV factory. First of all, set expectations right to enjoy the movie. Don't expect the brilliance of Satya, raciness of Company, or the impact of Ab Tak Chappan. Then you will end up actually enjoying the movie instead of panning it as just another mafia movie.
I am surprised that they didn't promote this movie as the prequel to Company. Hollywood would have milked the angle. Hindi movies need to start doing it. But it is a "prequel" to Company, no questions about that. When seen in that angle you understand the motivation behind making the film.
The biggest plus of the movie, like other RGV movies there is no sugar coating. The scene where Deshu is sitting and eating lunch in the chawl is so realistic of chawls in B'bay that you almost can touch and smell it. There is no Yash Chopra grandeur. The romance is gritty and real. There isn't too much dialogue in the movie which furthers the impact. There is no real need for it, you can extrapolate the dialogue from the situations. The background music is fitting. Another plus point of the movie is the focus on the story. The movie never veers from it. The story is about the rise of common man to that of a mafia don (Deshu). There aren't any sub plots to divert the attention of the viewer. The acting for most part is top notch. Rukshar (Bhakti Bhatnagar) who plays Deshu's girlfriend is the only one who doesn't command a screen presence.
So whats the biggest minus ? Like I said before it doesn't leave you breathless a.k.a Satya. You have appreciate the mumbai tapori/mafia/colloquial setup to some degree to like the movie. If you are a fan of the afore mentioned movies. Its a must see.
Socha Na Tha (2005)
Pleasant Surprize : Effervescent love story
I am always weary of watching movies with newcomers these days. But this movie took me by surprise. It is a fairly well made movie. Entertaining for the most part. You can't help but be reminded of the Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawala's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Its not specifically the family feud but a few scenes in the movie that are "directly inspired" by QSQT.
The movie starts with Abhay Deol (Viren) dating a Catholic girl (Karen). His parents think since he is 24 and needs to get married. They want him to meet prospective girls and pick one he likes. To placate his parents he agrees to this charade with no intention of choosing a girl. Turns out its a sensible pretty young girl Aditi (Ayesha Takia). With Viren's situation they find it very easy to converse without any pressure. They strike a chord. But Viren's rejection creates a rift amongst the families. The level of the feud seems a little unreal and too forced. Politics of arranged marriages don't reach this level of hostility. That I think is the weakest point of the film. All this happens in the first 15-20 mins of the film.
From that point Viren and Aditi develop a friendship with no strings attached while Viren is looking for the right moment to propose to Karen. The performances are decent. Ayesha Takia does the best in the role of Aditi, modern still rooted. A couple of songs are hummable. Its a refreshing love story. The dailogue is not melodramatic or over the top. Its a good movie.
Parineeta (2005)
A brilliant movie
Another adaptation of Sarat Chandra's classic Parineeta. There are many things common among Parineeta and Devdas. Since they both come from the same author. Childhood lovers, weak hero, dominant father, and pretty poor girl. But Sarkar tells the story beautifully. He makes you empathize for the lovers which I think Bhansali failed in Devdas. The setting of Kolkatta is beautiful. I think its great that instead of setting the movie in either early 1900s or the modern day, they chose to set it in the 60s. This way they can bring the opulence of a period film with giving it a modern touch.
Its the story of Shekar (Saif Ali Khan) and Lolita (Vidya Balan). Lolita comes to live with her uncle after the death of her parents. Shekar and lolita are neighbors. The transition from childhood friends to lovers is effortless. Then comes deceit, greed and misunderstandings. The movie explores whether their love is strong enough to weather it or do they end up like Devdas and Paro? Among the actors, Vidya is a revelation. Her simplicity brings a refreshing change. Sanjay Dutt as Girish fits his role to the T. It suits him to play an older man with a big heart. It is Saif who steals the show though. This is the first time he has excelled where he is not playing the playboy or the funny guy. He essays his role of the rich spoilt brat with a natural ease.
