Gods and Generals (2003)
Not so good
All I have to say about this movie is that there is nowhere in history that generals stood around making speeches out of nowhere to explain their life. I found this movie full of dumb speeches that would have never been spoken on a field of battle. The author really needs help when it comes to making something feel historically accurate; this movie is not that accurate. The speeches are so horrible and deliberate that one begins to think if this is just a bad Shakespeare play put on film or just a bad novel made into a movie. The battle scenes are great and use very historical accuracies but after that just reject the rest of the movie. If you can sit through this movie without sighing or yawning you are one of a kind.
The Beverly Hillbillies (1993)
Out of the whole clan of the Clampets only two make the cut
I was excited when this movie was announced because I had been raised on the reruns. I walked into the theater sat down and was prepared to be entertained. Actually, I was very disappointed. Only the characters of Granny and Jedd were worth their salt. The character of Jethro had been dumbed down to an absolute idiot and Ellie Mae became more of a tomboy than was ever present on the show. Jim Varney did a very good job, I would have to say Buddy Ebson had to have been proud, especially since he had a cameo in the movie. Cloris Leachman was an OK Granny, I went in disappointed because when she tried out for the part she had yet to have seen an episode. Also, I am from the Appalachian area of North Carolina so I know what mountain talk sounds like. Everyone but Jim Varney absolute butchered the Southern dialect, it wasn't even funny. All in all the only thing you get out of this is a good job by Jim Varney and very vague resemblance of the television show.
Pee-wee's Playhouse (1986)
A good dash of childhood memories
I remember watching this as a kid and loving it. My aunt use to call that afternoon and when I told her what the secret word was she would scream. Although the show did not really teach us anything as kids it helped us to use our imagination and have fun when we were just hanging out alone in our bedroom. There was also a little fun for the adults I sometimes rent the DVD's of the old show and enjoy an episode or two. Now however I can enjoy the hidden sexual references. I mean, Ms. Yvon, or however you spell her name, did not have to wear a dress that pushed her breasts up into her nose. But the good thing is that none of those references were blatant enough for kids to notice. I guess the main thing is that Pee Wee was a genius idea and still very popular.
