I love cars but...
27 August 2019
Wanted to see what films attracted millennial men. Girl movies are of no interest to me. The car race was unique and fun (the movie assumes you know all about the main characters and plot) I didn't. The main actor wearing the upside down cross was well corny. His "deepness" corn 101. The guy trys to kill him with a driverless motorcycle and he gives him back his car. Not my kind of hero. Cuban "paradise" the Maori little girl soccer teams...the whole thing became an icon for our upside down world. Where white is black and women are men. I like evil fun movies this one is painful to watch.

She-males at every plot inflection point MI now a "girls" movie franchise.

Dull and slow moving-- filming competent--direction OK I suppose actors are usually competent unless misdirected. Cruise comes off as worn out. Needs better writers and tone down the women's lib stuff. Mostly guys (used to) like these movies. Female villains and motor cycle racing sharp shooters? One is plenty not a whole movie filled with it. And get with the times... does anyone under 50 watch these things? Music would help..metallic rock or something.

decent adult period novel type screen play
31 March 2017
Screenplay based on a novel by John O'Hara in 1958. One of a dozen films Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward did as husband and wife. They stayed married until Newman died in 2008. The film cost $3 million and grossed $5 million. So it was major deal in those days but was not a runaway success. There was quite a lot of adult content for the time which was surprising. It was certainly apt for the time but all the concern about divorce makes it a period piece but an accurate period piece. I find all the filming on sets restrictive as I am spoiled by modern location and outdoor shooting. Although it is certainly not a great work. Will give it a solid 7. RECOMMEND

Bulgarian Scenery in well acted and filmed movie for adults
25 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
An elementary school teacher/lawyer Nadezhda(Margita Gosheva)shows her meddle. The plot opens with Nate doing a moral lesson with her English class students one of whom stole some cash. From the beginning Nate is willful and determined to make the thief confess and return the money. Nate is married to something of a loser ( Petar Valchanovwho) has spent their house payment money unsuccessfully trying to fix up and flip motor home. Nate finds this out when the bank officer comes to arrange an auction and foreclosure.

The movie moves slowly with location filming and no music. It never drags or bores and there is plenty of film craft things like visual symbols to keep your mind busy...one that stood out is a wall portrait glamour shot of Nate looking like a determined Joan Crawford. There is a down to earth somewhat feminist tone to Nate but not at all exaggerated or in your face.

The plot though not humorous has a situational Murphy's law logic to it. what can go wrong does at just the wrong time. There were a couple weak unbelievable moments in the plot one where Nate needs 50 cents to save her mortgage and the tellers don't offer to give it to her. The bank heist was a deus ex machina ending. But the movie is such good quality you have no trouble over looking this.

Anyway a great look at Bulgaria and its culture. A movie carried totally by the main actors and decent location filming and directing.

RECOMMEND

Kindly Hezbollah leaders saves Clooney-- Hollywood takes on the evil US oil companies
5 April 2015
Plot: Big bad evil US corporations assassinating/bribing/running over the poor of the world in pursuit of greed and oil. A US government in cahoots with them using their hit man (Clooney) to further things along unbeknownst to him.

An Older Sheik is about to name 1 of 2 sons his heir. The good son wants to bring women's rights to an Arab kingdom and sell oil at a higher price to the Chicoms. He would cut out the US and it's companies privileged position to plunder thus he must be eliminated in favor of his younger brother who is in the CIAs pocket splurging on weapons and letting his people starve.

A little side story glamorizing a wide eyed youthful suicide bomber--brought to this holy calling after being canned by the oil company and on the verge of being kicked out of a gulf state (no dreams of bringing his poor Pakistani mother to live with him). Another little side plot has noble Hezbollah leaders who stop Clooney from being beheaded (darn!).

This movie has is a multi-threaded plot that jumps all over the place constantly in short bursts. I didn't really understand the story until I read some of the reviews on IMDb after watching it. I am not sure anyone could understand who is who and why after 1 viewing. And frankly the lefty PC over all message turned me off mainly as unbelievable so I would have to be tied in a chair to watch it twice.

This won an an Oscar for Clooney. This movie must have influenced Clooney real life inspiring him to tie the knot with Amal Alamuddin (lebanese babe human rights lawyer).

Several flaws in this thing....the back drop of a lot of the action is Dubai (hardly lacking in infrastructure and development)--something the good Sheik to be wants to fix along with women's rights.

The $50 million (excellent) production values are largely wasted on a multiple story line plot fired at you in brief machine gun bits of story...I had to read other comments to figure out which character did what.

I still gave it 1 extra star for travel log/picture book effect. But thinking about it will take that star away so no one else wastes a futile 2 hours trying to follow the plot.

DO NOT WATCH.
