Les combattantes (2022)
About to start but my concern is why are
The four principal actors all facially attractive? A random selection of four people in any town or village is unlikely to produce four glamorous faces. If we are to be invested in at least some degree of realism let's have historical drama look real. There are further consequences related though to the film and television industry more generally. To what extent are roles given on the basis of showreel only for auditions in the first place? With thousands of aspiring actors struggling to live adequate lives, their Industry continues to adopt the Hollywood model of selection. And we know how that can turn out.
The Affair (2014)
Excessive and unnecessary nudity, sex a d lust detract.
With quite graphic sexual scenes every 8-10 minutes and/or everytime they see a door, the clever plot structure is diminished. Gratuitous nudity is as useful to the storytelling as a character with gastrointestinal problems and watching them in the lavatory with sound effects.
We can, through experience, imagine. More plot. Less bums. Watching them dressing! Pointless. Watching them undressing. So predictable. Someone thought this was important. Hmmm.
Serious editing required.
Regarding the plot....that useful bit often overlooked in pursuit of another romp and buttock frenzy...it's intriguing. Clues pepper the brief interludes between the....yes, the sex scenes.....and the story seen from different protagonists views is good.
Holding (2022)
Sometimes people miss the point.
I read in one review that the accents were wrong. Really? Which? Protagonist is from the north east. One PC is Dublin. Several have authentic Cork with natural lilting inflection. Not everyone in a town will be born there y'know.
Brenda Frickers ' monologue', a masterful lesson in unraveling a history. Again, so authentic I could be listening to my mother/aunt/elderly friend.
Woke? Pffft. Wake up and look beyond the obvious and you might find gold.
Emma. (2020)
Very poor interpretation
A comedy of manners becomes a dull and tawdry waste. Bare buttocks? Improper greetings! The basis upon which the story is built has been forgotten ( or worse, abused). Some famous faces should have known better. Cheap laughs.... seriously.... like Saturday night on ITV.
Avoid.
