Don't Look Up (2021)
A must watch for anyone who can't remember history.
It was bittersweet funny. And a sadly accurate parody of current events. All the great actors in this movie didn't disappoint and helped make this satire watchable.
A couple of reviews were very negative of this movie - citing confusing twists or irrelevant topics - it was probably false expectations on the reviewers part.
In my opinion - they must have been expecting a realistic end of world drama. Me, I was expecting stupid satire on the level of Tropic Thunder or
Hot Shots! Or worse, the three stooges. I almost didn't watch this. So the unexpected laughs for me were a bonus. I attribute that to the stellar acting.
The Unforgivable (2021)
Sorry no car chases and shoot outs!
I'm reading some poor reviews in here. I'm disappointed. Not enough action for all of you nay-sayers.
This was a gritty movie. The story was really harsh. The character Ruth (Sandra Bullock) was given no second chances - no do overs. And Sandra Bullock played this character really way. Having seen her in so many happy, happy ending movies, always made up to perfection - she looked like a down and out character - not just physically but the way she carried herself. She was handed so many slaps in the face, yet she kept moving forward - only losing her temper when she tried to see her sister. You won't leave this movie with happy feel good but you will be satisfied. Nothing was over the top, the main character was wearing crapoy clothing, had a crappy place to live, and had no one on her side. Usually, I see designer clothing, high heels, perfectly coifed hair and an apartment big enough to house the 10 people confortably - as Hollywood is wont to do. In fact, even the pace seemed more like real life. IT WAS A REAL DRAMA AND AN INTERESTING STORY.
Y: The Last Man (2021)
It hooked me
I found myself liking the character of 355 (Romans) and not so much Hero and Yorick. I guess that is a testimony to how well they played their parts. Spoiled, self-centered grown children of apolitical important Senator Diane Lane. What took me by surprise was the violence and aggressiveness of the women. I'm sure if such a thing were to occur- there would be some women who start off with distrust and suspicion - but the actually violence seemed over the top.
A couple of reviews were annoyed that there were not enough women engineers to keep the infrastructure of the USA running. The insult is that women are too dumb to be in those positions. At least that is how the review seemed to take it. I wasn't insulted - if anything I thought it was an interesting point to make. Women are often held back or "run off" from traditional male jobs. I could believe this scenario easily - not because women are too dumb...no...because so many give up and go into teaching roles, or other more traditional roles. Many are encouraged to stay home (and ruin any chance) and raise the babies first before the career- and then find out the hard way - yeah...that baby raising stuff is held against women in a number of ways. Sometimes it's subtle but it's always there.
As for the story itself, trying to get the last man and male monkey to a lab to figure out what is what...well - that could have been interesting. I kept thinking about sperm banks but I suppose they would want to consider first what went wro/pregnancing before trying to bring men back in the world. I think at some point some women lost male babies.
Lost Girls and Love Hotels (2020)
Intense
Many reviewers said they didn't see a plot or get a point. I think you have to have been at a really low point in your own life to "get it". If you've not personally experienced this low place then you should watch with the understanding...that this movie/story definitely evokes what it feels like when a human soul goes "down there". It's gritty, hopeless, hopeful and bleak. The drinking in this story represents the lack of control you feel when you are this miserable. And of course, sometimes, it is what it is. The happiness and relationship she had for only a brief moment didn't have closure for her and she went lower. Then he came back and lifted her back up. He didn't give her complete happiness but she got closure in the end. It's hard to watch a movie like this sometimes because it's almost too honest and raw.
I think it might have benefitted from a few details - such as what it means to be yazuka. As for what she was running away from...yeah, maybe if we knew the details, it would help for the viewers who don't get this kind of despair. But really, it didn't matter - just know it must have been hard for her - her irrational behavior and drinking reflected that. She was really good for this part - her eyes are so expressive and unique. He was a good choice, too. He convinced me he was torn and conflicted, tough and tender. And bonus...he was hawt!!!
Into the Badlands (2015)
Gotta Agree
This show was hands down original. Futuristic, action, drama, humour, steampunk, martial arts, mysticism, dystopian, and bonus lots of good looking, if not incredibly beautiful, people.
Like a few other reviewers what dropped my score from what could have been a solid 10 to a 9 was both the actor and character, MK. I just disliked his acting it seemed a little, uh, contrived? Maybe he tried too hard? Or maybe the actor really just had a difficult time with the character MK who was "mysterious" yet, unfailingly human. His character starts off being this really good kid, with a very tough start. And then, for a reason that was given to him through a vision, suddenly becomes bad. MK now believes the guy who saved him (Sunny), took him under his wing, gave him a purpose, is now his enemy. Just seems like a light switch went off. There should have been a more believable transition between his good character and his bad character- life is not just black and white - it also has many shades of gray - complex in the variations. Changing from very good to bad shouldn't just happen. Perhaps an evil twin cousin could have helped alleviate the sudden switch in allegiance and character flaws.
Still though the series was simply excellent and had a very satisfying ending.
The Bygone (2019)
It had the potential for a 10
The filming was great, not cheap. The actors were pretty good. Not stiff and wooden.
I read a few reviews that hated the lead male for being a "wimp". The irony of their review being so negative about that...it was kinda the point. He was young, inexperienced/naive, and heavily influenced by his mother in gentleness. He was tough when he needed to be and only after he realized that was the only thing that would work. He grew up.
My problem with the movie was the mixed messages and unfinished business. I thought the movie was trying to teach us that oil fracking was bad, yet the repercussions/outcomes/impacts was barely touched. The story background on the sex slavery was foggy. It was a great opportunity to shed some light on a real problem, yet there was almost no detail. It was primarily about one native woman, in particular. Clearly, she had been tricked into the sex slavery. The story had a chance and even started to tell more about it with the other native women...but nothing - it needed a much stronger message. They just appear and disappear. We don't even find out what happens to the group of 3 women from the shelter that the villain re-kidnaps. I guess some of those parts might have wound up on the cutting room floor - it felt a bit jarring and, well, unfinished.
Otherwise, I rather liked the twist at the end. I knew something was coming with the hero's uncle but even that took me by surprise. I don't want the endings to be completely boring and predictable, so that was good.
Is Genesis History? (2017)
A really thoughtful documentary
I am happy that I watched the movie Is Genesis History? Watching it has helped me strengthen my ability to have faith in God. This is the third significant time I went into an experience expecting to have my faith completely shaped away and instead found it more strengthened. I am in, sometimes good, a serious doubter of all things not proved. That's great when it comes to sussing out scams not so great when it comes to giving control over my soul to complete faith in God. I openly admit that.
I went to this movie expecting to see silly examples, or hysterical insistence, and no effort to prove it and came away with complete respect and admiration for the method used to raise doubt in anyone's mind. At one point, one of the scientists, a geologist, is explaining how the current method of dating of the rocks is misconstrued and misunderstood by many scientist. It's ironic that when I search the Internet – the scientist who still believe in the debunked method (in this movie) of dating rocks deny that the number of scientists who no longer give credence as "insignificant numbers" yet they do not produce names or numbers. Much of the evidence is based on "the Flood". At the beginning of the movie, the narrator stands in a deep canyon, with a small stream, and says science tells us that it took thousands of years for the stream to carve the canyon, and the plants to take up life there. And yet this is not true, the canyon was created as recently as the 1980's, for those of you old enough to remember Mt. St. Helen's eruption – this particular canyon was created by that volcanic occurrence. It's a stunning way to start the movie. Years, ago, I remember watching another movie about creation versus evolution. At that time I must not have paid enough attention because I was not fully convinced. But one of the things that stuck with me from that documentary was looking at the excavation of a bed of dinosaur fossils. All of the dinosaurs appeared to have died while swimming. These were not the sea faring dinosaurs. In Is Genesis History movie, they showed plenty of evidence to give even the most hard core evolutionist reason to doubt. The type of fossils found, the arrangement of the fossils, the locations, and the amount. After this segment of the movie, if you don't doubt, then you were not listening. The key again is the great Flood. In the Grand Canyon, the lowest layer with the anomaly, the various layers with the sea animals, and dinosaurs, and through it all the impossibility of each layer just randomly forming with all the fossils. Evolutionist would have us believe that it was just random. The geologist that explained in this movie, discussed how the sizes of the layers formed and under what conditions. These were not random conclusions – the evidence he presented was overwhelming.
A conversation with a biologist brought up something that has always had me doubting evolution. That is how could every living thing in its complexity evolve from the same cell? It's like putting a bunch of code words in a computer and expecting the words to just randomly organize itself in this complex artificial intelligence; cannot be done. The amount of time it would take for a sea animal to develop appropriate lungs to live on land – is preposterous enough to give doubt as to why would the animal keep trying? And how is it possible the animal survived during transition? Sure, there have been evolutionary changes in each genus or species but the dramatic changes suggested by Darwin and evolution would suggest finding the missing link in all the various classes or kingdoms. Not only has the missing link never been found for humans there are none for any of the other classes. Not popularly talked about is that Darwin was proved by modern scientist to be wrong on much of his theories. He was right about many things but not in how we evolve. I had learned that myself when taking anthropology classes.
The astronomy portion of the movie was not as heavy hitting as the geological, biological, and anthropological sections but it didn't support the evolution theory either.
Overall, this was presented as a documentary and not a movie, so I'm sure some people were disappointed. But I, for one, thought it was worth every penny because of the calm, factual presentation they used to show that creation is much easier to believe than evolution. At the end they suggested going to the website for additional information. I agree. Don't just take their word for it – do your own investigations. I signed up for a study guide and updates. I really want to learn more specifics so I can have reasonable persuasive debates with evolutionist. It's the first time I've been hard struck with the notion that maybe our children should be learning both sides of the story. After all, science proves over and over again, that science does change. And teaching our children that – it is important – to always seek knowledge from all sources – keep up-to- date and keep an open mind before you decide. For me, I no longer have doubts. God is my creator.
