Aquamarine (2006)
Pleasantly surprised!
I assumed that this movie was going to be awful, so I avoided it while it was in theatres. I work at a daycare center, and one of the little girls brought the DVD in with her to watch. I dreaded putting the DVD figuring that no one would end up watching it (the kids are very young, infants, toddlers and pre schoolers mostly).
I put the DVD in with very low expectations. The kids sat for a few minutes, which they do for every movie, but then, they didn't move! They were completely enthralled, even the two year olds sat in quiet and shushed me if I talked. I even enjoyed the movie myself.
The film was great for young children and adults as well! It kept my attention, and was absolutely endearing.
The Ten Commandments (1956)
Good Movie.. but I liked the Prince of Egypt Better
If you are Christian or Jewish and you don't know the story of Moses, then don't call yourself that. (I find it funny that I have to put a spoiler notice on one of the most well known biblical story.) I saw this movie when I was nine, and had nightmares about it. I suppose they were trying to show the truth about slavery, but the part about the grease woman just got to me. The characters were overly dramatic, which always annoys me, and the story was stretched out too much. I suppose if I were to watch it now, I'd probably like it better, but from a child's point of view, the movie was terrifying!! My sister and I had to sleep with our parents after watching it. Instead, I suggest the Prince of Egypt, with great music and story.
The Terminal (2004)
Cute Until a Point
The movie seemed to have an interesting premise, and for the first half hour, I was intrigued. Then, the plot began to fall apart. I didn't understand why airport security was hellbent on keeping him in the airport and not helping him obtain the correct papers. Also, what was with Catherine Zeta-Jones' character? There seemed to be a budding romance, that abruptly ended. The movie was mediocre at best. Even my grandmother was left asking what was going on. Throughout the entire movie I was poked and asked, "What's going on?". This was a thin attempt for Spielburg and Hanks to obtain their lost glory. This is no "Saving Private Ryan." Watch that instead, it's less painful.
The West Wing (1999)
Great for the first four seasons
I admit, I'm slightly obsessed. I thoroughly enjoyed the first four seasons and own them on DVD. I personally love "Celestial Navigation", that was good for so manny laughs. Unfortunately, that enjoyment didn't last. The fifth season seriously went downhill. The entire Donna-explosion thing was a horrible attempt to add drama to the story, and reminded me too much of Roslyn. Also, sending Donna to work for Russel was a big mistake. After ditching the Josh-Sam chemistry, we were dependent on Josh-Donna for laughs. That didn't happen for long. I do hope they don't push the show for more seasons with Alda or Smits. Smits can't act and annoys me. Long live the first four seasons on DVD!!
The Pianist (2002)
Beautiful!
I don't think I've ever cried so hard when watching a movie before. The story touched me deeply, and is the best Holocaust film since Schindler's list. The movie held back nothing, going so far as to show a man being thrown from his wheelchair on his balcony by a Nazi. On the same token, it did not make the mistake of portraying the German people as an evil race. He received help from a kind family and a doctor who risked their lives to help him. This movie is moving, but not for the faint of heart. If you can't stand violence and suffering, don't watch, but if you can bear it, watch the story unfold. It will change your life!
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Horrendous!!
Firstly, the story of Romeo and Juliet has been done too many times, and contains no real substance. Second, this modern angle makes it worse than ever before. DiCaprio is a terrible actor, they should have cast someone who can show emotion and speak properly. Danes annoys me because she is always emotionless and appears to be high. The soundtrack had nothing to do with the movie, and was irritating. The only amusing part was when Mercutio dressed up as a transvestite. Bad movie, poorly made, overrated, and painful to watch. Did I mention that the story is insulting to women? If you're looking for a good Shakespearean romance flick, check out "Shakespeare In Love", instead.
I Love You, I Love You Not (1996)
Confusing and Badly Executed
The acting was atrocious, although with Claire Danes, I have yet to see a movie I liked. Jude Law made an interesting debut, but I didn't quite understand what he was supposed to be. Danes' character was just strange, I couldn't understand the collapse in the lecture. How many times can we beat the Jews or any other race for that matter? The move mad the mistake of making the general population seem very prejudiced. I found this movie unrealistic and boring. Too many of these "discover you're heritage" movies are coming out. At least mine, "Angela's Ashes" was decent, but if you've seen them once, you've seen them all. For those of you looking to reconnect with your past, might I suggest "The Pianist"? This movie is horrible, don't waste your time.
Luther (2003)
Too Flattering
I admit that I was forced to go. Although I follow the Lutheran religion, I would by no means glorify Martin Luther this much. The movie leaves out the fact that he was an alcoholic and antisemitic, making him not much better than his Catholic counterparts. The movie was slow and boring. I only stayed awake because and elderly woman kept yelling at the screen and Joseph Fiennes good looks and acting made it tolerable. Honestly, it was a story that could have been told in ten minutes, much like it was in Sunday School, and left at that. It actually made me want to be a Roman Catholic, at least their scandals are interesting.
