Crooked House (2017)
Not Very Good
I must admit I haven't read the book and so can't compare this.
Despite a stellar cast the film manages to be plodding and very boring.
Worst of all is Max Irons who so lacks screen presence that he seems to suck the life out of every scene he appears in - which is unfortunately most of the scenes in the film.
Just check out the scenes where he appears with the child actress and note how her charisma totally outshines him.
Sorry but this film whilst having high production values lacks just about everything else including enjoyment.
Mientras duermes (2011)
Heart of Darkness
A harrowing look at the human soul.
A man who regards himself as being incapable of feeling happy can only prevent his own suicide by making those he interacts with unhappy.
The happier the acquaintance the more driven he is to make them feel like him.
He is particularly motivated to cause unhappiness in people who are kind to him.
This is a stunning film with brilliant performances which Hitchcock would have probably described as his best film had he made it.
The phrase the banality of evil sums up César perfectly - and yet he is not evil but a deeply tortured all too human person.
The film certainly made me think about the times I have deliberately tried to emotionally hurt someone because I was feeling out of sorts.
Watch this film - you will never forget César, just like the unfortunate Clara, but the next time you are about to say something cruel you just might reconsider before you say it.
Straight into my top ten of all time.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Pandora (2003)
Anger Forming
I agree with those reviewers who point out the problems with the depiction of the Czech Republic and their law enforcement.
However I think the transnational and financial basis of much child sexual abuse was handled very well.
Personally I wanted to see those abusers castrated - and I don't mean chemically.
It makes me sick that such people exist.
Law & Order: Patriot (2002)
Fundamental error based on a lack of understanding
Haddad was identified as a Shia Muslim.
Every single attack in the West including 9/11 has been done by Sunni Muslims. Not a single attack by the Shia, not one ever.
The Imam at the mosque Briscoe and Green visited would certainly have made this point - Shia and Sunni each have their own separate mosques.
Indeed Sunni Islamists hate the Shia, who they regard as idolaters, even more than they hate the West.
The US cannot hope to formulate any kind of sensible policy towards Islamism until Americans understand this very basic fact about the schism in Islam.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Manhattan Vigil (2012)
What about the cop who solved the case?
I concur with everything that the other review says but I find one aspect of this episode very disturbing.
I am not sure exactly where the cop who actually tracked down and collated all the evidence fits into the policing system.
However I find it deeply disturbing that an obviously talented and dedicated law enforcement officer was simply disregarded as a full time detective simply because he suffered from depression and anxiety.
He had more talent and concern for the victims than all the other detectives who worked the cases of the disappeared boys, as was additionally attested to by the relatives of the disappeared children.
In the end he was not even given recognition for the fact he had identified all the other boy victims and handed SVU the case on a plate.
Movie 43 (2013)
Trompe l'oeil of social mores
First off I should say I just saw the non-US version which has a different linking story - three kids trying to find the mysterious Movie 43 on the internet rather than a pitch. This actually seems to make more sense than the pitch scenario and does provide a reasonable framework.
I think this movie is not what most reviewers have taken it to be. I take each short as translating common social situations, attitudes and prejudices, and distorting them into parodies of themselves.
Imagine Derek and Clive collaborating with Michel Foucault on the scripts for a series of sketches and you'd end up with something like Movie 43.
