ESSENTIALS: HIGH CONCEPT. BLOCK BUSTERS: NEW HOLLYWOOD. VIDEOCLUB (1975 - )

High concept refers to a film with an intentionally straightforward narrative which can be easily communicated and comprehended, allowing it to be accurately summarised for widespread marketing campaigns. Steven Spielberg once said, "I like ideas, especially movie ideas, that you can hold in your hand. If a person can tell me the idea in twenty-five words or less, it's going to make a pretty good movie." Spielberg's comment embodies the essence of the high concept film, which can be condensed into one simple sentence that inspires marketing campaigns, lures audiences, and separates success from failure at the box office.
1. The hero must be dealing with a BIG PROBLEM. Good scripts are about conflict and great scripts are about both internal and external conflict! 2. Some of the visual scenes are huge. We don't see a couple of fighter planes in the sky. We see dozens! 3. We either see an ordinary man in an extraordinary world or an extraordinary man in an ordinary world. Top Gun is about an extraordinary man. Jaws uses an ordinary man. 4. The concept must be original. There may be several movies about an asteroid hitting earth, but if there are, they probably went into development about the same time or they are spaced years apart. 5. An 'A list actor' would find this movie an appropriate vehicle for his/her career

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone

Hollywood was renewed and reborn with the earlier collapse of the studio system, and the works of many new and experimental film-makers (nicknamed "Movie Brats") during a Hollywood New Wave.
First American New Wave: (Influenciados por la nueva novelle vague francesa): John Cassavetes, Shirley Clarke,
Direct Cinema: Robert Drew: Gimme Shelter, Monterey Pop.
American New Wave Cinema (1967-1969): brought to the screen a new level of gritty intensity and contemporary relevance: Bonnie & Clyde y El graduado son las semillas y progenitoras del New Hollywood.
Arthur Penn, William Friedkin, Bob Rafelson, Hal Ashby and Francis Ford Coppola
