Poor Things (2023)
Emma Stone deserves her Oscar...But...
First, let me say that without a doubt, Emma Stone deserves her Best Actress Oscar and the film was beautiful to look at, but, I found myself wondering one thing and one thing only.
Does an NC-17 or NR rating exist anymore, because this film is MUCH stronger than simply an "R"? I've seen many "R" rated films over the years (and, yes, I'm aware that Hollywood has continued to "push" the "R" finish line), but, this film goes way beyond an "R" rating.
This retelling of the Frankenstein legend was interesting in spots, but, simply strange in many others. Not a film I would recommend or care to watch again.
Halloween Ends (2022)
A horrid mess...
What in the world did I just watch?? This full of psycho-babble entry in the Halloween series would have been a great episode of Dr. Phil. Let's see....get Laurie to talk about how she seems to be able to run a semi-normal life after 40 years of being chased by a guy in overalls that were never cleaned, a granddaughter who, after watching her Mom, Dad and boyfriend slaughtered by Michael Myers is suddenly attracted to his incarnation, a young attractive office worker who is going to do the nasty with her doctor boss still calling him "Doctor" after receiving a sexy outfit and the whole town of Haddonfield who blames Laurie for EVERYTHING that has happened in the last 40 years.
Dr. Phil would have loved this group......
Around the World in 80 Days (2021)
Much better versions already made....
David Niven and Pierce Brosnan are Phileas Fogg. David Tennant is not.
IF you have read the Jules Verne masterpiece, you'll remember Fogg as a very self-assured gentleman willing to take on the adventure of a lifetime. If Verne had David Tennant as his Fogg, the character wouldn't have made it past the White Cliffs of Dover. Fogg's two traveling companions are basically babysitters. Fogg is such an unlikable person, he really gives them no reason to go along with him.
The 1956 film and the 1989 mini-series are so much better than this wimpy imitation. They're available, so, the best advice I can give is watch either of them instead.
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021)
The best performance this year!
If it is true that the measure of a great movie performance is having an actor disappear into their role and the viewer forgets about the actor, Jessica Chastain gives THE best performance of 2021. After about 10 minutes, we forgot that Chastain was PLAYING Tammy Faye and she simply BECAME Tammy Faye. Performed with a wonderful balance of wide-eyed belief and blind-eyed innocence, this is the film that should give Chastain her Oscar she should have won for Zero Dark Thirty. I have seen Kristin Stewart in her over the top, but, critics fav role of Princess Diana in Spencer and I never for one minute thought Stewart disappeared into the role. Chastain does and it's a work of art!
The Stand In (2020)
I guess "black comedy" would be a better description.....
The mistake IMDB makes is describing this film in the storyline as a "hilarious comedy". Uh, No. I think if it was sold as a "black comedy", THAT description might be a little closer to the truth. Never really been a big fan of Drew Barrymore, but, I usually find her watchable. Sadly, all I kept thinking when she was the character of Candy, the recluse in her huge mansion, was "Is that Susan Sarandon?" Sadly, it wasn't. There are enough twists and turns to keep you hanging in and you see the ending coming from a mile away, but, still, the "black comedy" aspect of the film is simply..."Be careful what you wish for...."
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Please pass the Prozac....
This movie kinda describes 2020 to a "T". In this year like no other, the world is going through a mass depressive state and along comes this VERY depressing movie. Is the acting great? Certainly. Is the directing terrific? Of course, BUT, what we all need right now is something escapist and this film ain't it. Full of enablers and people I wouldn't want to spend five minutes getting to know, I'm certainly glad to know that author J.D. Vance was able to overcome this disfunctional family, but, I certainly sorry I was along for the ride.
Persons Unknown (2010)
Why all the positive reviews???
OK, I'll admit, I'm a little late to the "review party" for Persons Unknown, but, just finished watching all 13 episodes and I have to ask...why all the positive reviews?
First of all, who wrote the tag line at the end of each episode...Donald Trump? Each episode ended with the lie "By the end of summer, all will be revealed". Never happened! After the end of the thirteenth episode, I had more questions than I did after the end of episode one! The group ends up back in the same ghost town, but, this time on a ship named "Lost Souls". The night manager states "Welcome to Level 2". Does the ship's name imply they are all in Hell? Does the desk clerk's statement mean they are simply players in a video game (after all, "The Program" is watching them and manipulating them.)? Who knows?
I was so disappointed, mainly in myself for being suckered into this mess. Why I believed that corporate TV would actually follow through on their promise to "reveal all" is beyond me.
Never again!
Cheyenne (1996)
There are two reasons to watch this western........
And they both belong to Bobbie Phillips! If you want to watch a western classic, rent The Searchers. If you want a fun 90 minutes, including the beautiful Bobbie Phillips in full naked mode, this is the one to see!
