Coming 2 America (2021)
Why is nobody talking about how disgusting the central premise is?
So basically, this movie's central premise is a retcon that Prince Akeem was raped in the first movie. As in a woman drugged him and had sex with him without his consent or even his awareness. It's only 30 years later that he even discovers that it happened. But not once is the horrendousness of the situation addressed. It's either played for laughs or Akeem is treated like the bad guy in the situation.
Even worse, his abuser is treated like some sort of bad-ass no nonsense woman who we're clearly meant to find hilarious. His wife even befriends her!
So we have a male victim set up just to be mocked or villainised, just to make way for yet another girl power plot, identical to pretty much every other movie of the last decade or so.
I tried very much to like this movie, despite its flaws, but this central premise just left my skin crawling the whole way through. Yes, I know it's a comedy. But tell me this, if the gender roles were reversed and a woman had been in Akeem's situation, would it have been accepted?
Supernatural: Alpha and Omega (2016)
Loved it - a different kind of finale
I loved this, after 11 years it was a good idea to have a different kind of resolution to the big bad. The penultimate episode was more in line with the traditional 'big final battle' kind of finale, while this gave us something that isn't seen as often: a peaceful resolution where everybody walks away and nobody has to die (well, we know that, but it looks like the characters will have to wait a bit to find out that everybody has survived).
It was actually a pretty beautiful resolution that tied in well with the show's overarching themes of family and redemption. But that's not to say that it didn't still have high stakes and tension, because it certainly did. In fact, the stakes were probably the highest they've been since they boys' first Apocalypse back in season five.
And of course, despite the peaceful resolution to the season's arc, they still managed to set up the next season with a few dangling threads. We've got a potential new threat coming and one of the most shocking, out of left-field surprise cliffhangers that we've ever seen.
Overall, I think this was a pretty solid season with an interesting finale (even if the previous episode was the more epic of the two episodes - I'd definitely recommend thinking of them as a two-part package deal). I can't wait to start on season 12!
Supernatural: Just My Imagination (2015)
Come for the imagination, stay for the heart!
I can't stress how much I adore this episode! From the beginning I knew I was in for a treat, because I love the crazy idea, usually comedic episodes. So naturally, starting off with an imaginary friend being brutally murdered had me hooked. But what elevated it to the next level was the heart that the episode and how it sneakily managed to tie in to the wider arc of the season.
Don't get me wrong, there was still plenty of the zaniness that you'd expect from the episode synopsis, but the emotional gut punches and insights into Sam's character arc really took it to new heights.
This episode would easily be in my top five so far, maybe even top three and I really hope I'll get to see more of Sully and his world.
Death to 2020 (2020)
Absolutely hilarious! The perfect antidote to an awful year.
This had me laughing the whole way through, I loved it! It reminded me of just how much craziness went down last year, even before Covid and the election hit.
The mockumentary was surprisingly poignant at times, but most importantly it helps us to laugh at what was undoubtedly a horrible year. And that's exactly what we need.
