Kuruthipunal (1995)
Movie of the wrong era !!
To start with this movie is a Masterpiece!. And somehow, I have always felt and still feel that this movie was not for the 1990's Indian audience. This is one of the most Raw, dark, brutal action thrillers of Indian Cinema which would have got it's righteous accolades if this movie had been made much later (probably 2020's).
The movie Delays, Disables & Disintegrates into your mind and shows the nasty reality of politics and terrorism that marches on. This movie is not for the weak, but teaches even the strongest, that there is a breaking point for everyone which will eventually break you down. The movie showcases this to perfection.
The story revolves around 2 honest police officers trying to bring down a terrorist organization and whether they succeeded or succumbed to it, when faced with hard reality checks. The direction and acting are top notch and the best part being no songs and no masala!
If you are a fan of raw action flicks, then this movie is a must watch!!
Kabali (2016)
KABALI - The movie!!! Not Rajini!
To start with - I am not a fan, I am not a critic, I am not a fanatic over movies or actors. I am a person who like to watch good movies and I always treat movies as a director's art work, rather than an actor's master piece. I have not written a review on movies until today. But I felt that I need to share my thoughts about this movie in particular because it is one of the good movies that I have watched in Tamil in the recent past.
To me, it is an out an out director's movie who has once again delivered the best to his ability incorporating a superstar into a genre which defines PA Ranjith. He has cast all his characters to perfection with all the actors performing to their best in their respective roles. The hero of the movie Rajinikanth (not the superstar Rajini) has delivered a terrific screen presence and his style of course being top notch. His acting, expressions were put to test after nearly two decades since the movie Thalapathy was released. All the co- actors were also just splendid! A special mention to Radhika Apte, Kishore, Dhansika, Dinesh and Rydvika on their class acts over their demanding roles.
There has been over a million predictions on the movie since the first teaser was released. And predictions and thoughts are always going to be one's dreams unless the movie is directed by themselves. So I did not have any thoughts or expectations on the movie, esp I tried to forget that the actor was the Superstar. Hence, at the end of the movie I really felt contempt on watching a really awesome dramatic gangster flick in Tamil.
The story that starts with the mass intro that the public demands, then goes into a much settled director's mode and then ends with a tint of Hollywood touch. However there are slight moments in the movie that makes you feel that the plot is slightly deviating from the actual theme and a little dragging at times. But all that was pulled back and the movie re tracks to the core theme towards the end which makes it a treat to watch. The movie has its action sequences, sentiments, emotions, etc, etc. But I was extremely happy that such a gangster movie did not have the usual masala elements, duet songs and comedy tracks to it which we normally associate to every other Tamil movies.
As negatives to the movie, I could see only its fans, as I feel that they are still not able to digest the fact that their Thalaiver has not delivered a mass hero movie. I just hope that the people and society do not make it too harsh on good directors like Ranjith to make good MOVIES rather than mass entertainers.. KABALI the movie is definitely worth a watch gangster movie after a long time! Kudos Ranjith and Rajini!!
