Goldstone (2016)
Slow and unrealistic
The pacing is too slow. I had to watch it at 1.5x speed to bear it.
The main character is a barely tolerable drunk, tolerable only because he was working for the good cause.
The plots of the film played out poorly and were unclear. It felt like a train leaving the station and then never getting anywhere. Only the connection between the two policemen played out well,
I give it three stars because the cameramen did a good job, and some of the actors were good.
Deep Burial (2017)
Mediocre
This movie felt somewhat like a cross between a couple of movies I've seen, one being Moon (2009) and the other I can't remember.
In all aspects - acting, scenery, story - I felt that Moon was a better movie. It does not make this a bad movie, but I never got the same feeling watching this one.
Perhaps if I saw this one first, I'd rate it a 6 or 6.5. But I gave Moon an 8.
Wrath of the Titans (2012)
Lacking story
Good:
The scenery, cgi and costume design is great, and you could probably just cut a selection of random parts of any scenes and it'd be a great trailer.
Not so good:
Now trailers usually don't give much story, and neither did this film. It seemed like all the storythreads they had, were missing bits and pieces. It was like they were trying to make the story as thin as possible, or as if the producer was afraid a story would get in the way of all the fighting and cgi.
Annoyments:
* Perseus decides not to save the world with his father in order to protect his son? Oh yeah, he's just a semi god, so he's just semi-logical?
* Poseidon's great fear was to die, to become - nothing. His internal stuggle to overcome this fear and join Zevs again is given 3 seconds
* A labyrinth was built in ancient times that looked like it would take years to pass through. Luckily they have a map and a navigator. Unluckily the producer thinks there is too little fighting going on, so he decides the map is useless, and so is the navigator and swish, swosh, swish, five minutes later they are through!
* I could go on and on, but probably the most useless part of the film was the love story (all films must have a hero and a blonde who kiss in the end right?). If you decide to watch this film, highly against my recommendations, then please amuse yourself by following this exceptionally romantic love story that is entirely absent until the very end and, try to make sense of it.
Reign of Fire (2002)
The story is too self contradictory
The positives:
Acting was ok, although the characters were mostly one dimensional, and the hero/pretty lady part didn't really grip me, and neither did the hero dad/adopted son part.
Sound was very good.
Visuals were good, but lacked depth. Both the Mad Max films and Waterworld did a better job at creating a dystopian wolrd.
The idea behind the story was inventive and should have been a great story.
The negative:
A list of a few of the things that didn't make sense.
* How did Denton Van Zan cross the Atlantic during one hour of dusk?
* Why didn't Denton Van Zan & crew try to sneak into London by dusk when they knew the dragons couldn't see properly? Was it only Quinn who was smart enough to realize this cause he's the big hero?
* How did the giant dragon know where the castle was?
* And where was it? Near Edinburgh? Or just on the border of London?
* What do dragons eat? Soot or flesh? If flesh, why did they burn everyone? If soot, why did they sometimes eat them alive?
* What were the nuclear weapons used against? A superhigh consentration of dragons somewhere? That would be a city, but a city before the dragons get there would be manslaughter and after the dragons were there would be unneccessary because the dragons would leave when there were no more people there. And London was spared. So there's no place to nuke that makes sense,
* When all the worlds army forces had been in ruins for 20 years after having so little success that Denton Van Zan is greeted as a magic man for having a dragons tooth, how come all it took to take out the giant dragon was an explosive shot from a crossbow?
* After the big boy died, did all the other dragons just disappear?
This film was jawdropping. I wish it was because it was good, but my jaw droped because my brain was unable to cope with all the logical flaws of the film and had no resources left to control my facial muscles.
The Departed (2006)
Killing scenes seem more important than story
The actors did a decent job. The male roles required no specific acting talents. The only male actor showing anything other than generic "tough guy", was Jack Nicholson who played the same character as he did in that 1989 batman-film....
Damon and DiCaprio are so similar it was actually hard to tell them apart sometimes.
In this film, it seems the director decided "cool" killing scenes are way more important than logical story elements. Especially the ending. Why the hiccup did Billy (DiCaprio) find it necessary to meet up with Sullivan (Damon) there? ...Oh yeah, so they could put in a few more killing scenes.
Bushwhacked (1995)
Great acting by Daniel Stern
Daniel Stern as Max is the main character in this movie, and he's hilarious. One of the best acting performances I've ever seen.
There's also a very good storyline which is surprising for a movie of this type, and the scenery is great. The casting of characters has been well done - and the characters in this movie fit their roles as good as can be.
This movie is a classic in my mind, but after reading some of the other reviews, I see that unless you like Daniel Stern's act you're not going to like the movie either.
Anyway, I deeply recommend you see the movie. If you're like me, you'll love it, and if not, just turn it off after 5 minutes cause it's not gonna take more than that for you to make up your mind.
