The Yankles (2009)
if you are an intolerant fool, you won't like this
the real star of this charming movie is the baseball team. the customs and traditions of the orthodox jews are engaging and cheerful. i found myself wanting to know more .
at first it might seem like the story is about charlie jones, former pro baseball player and drunk. there are secondary plotpoints about charlie, and his adjustment to his new lot in life. fast forward through these scenes. they don't move the story aong any. neither does his love for the sister of one of the players. their whole storyline is schmaltzy and is easily ignored - mostly because both actors are not as good as the actors that played the members of the baseball team. do yourself a favor and ignore any scene without the team.
this movie is a little gem. its free on amazon prime so what have you got to lose?
Cop Out (2010)
Boy, this was really bad.
Even for Kevin Smith. That's not to say I don't enjoy Smith's movies. I do. I even liked Jersey Girl, that thing with Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler. So I thought I knew what to expect. (Then again, I had no interest in seeing Zack & Miri so maybe Kevin and I have just gone our own way.)
It wasn't horrendous or offensive but the performances are forced. You can see Tracy Morgan trying to wind himself up for his bits, and Bruce Willis coasts then shines, then coasts some more. It was so bad I got up to read NYTimes.com and ended up following a link to Maru The Cat on YouTube. Bad move. It then became painfully obvious how bad Cop Out really is; the cat made me bust out laughing and Cop Out did little more than amuse.
There are inklings of great ideas left undeveloped and if Smith was a freshman filmmaker I would say he has great promise but at this stage in his career he should be delivering more. Save your money.
The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009)
i can't believe this has more than 2 stars
i am trying to wrap my head around who would give this movie 7 stars. maybe it was a group of anarchists trying to skew the scoring just for the hell of it. maybe it was a marketing company who needed to get some buzz for this film. i don't know.
i really liked the first film- it was a lot of fun. well-written, editing and cinematography was good and overall the movie fulfilled my most deepest revenge fantasies.
this time around the anger and spitfire insults sounded hollow, almost pathetic.the violence seemed just downright stupid. the production values are non-existent. the sound quality is flat, music is mediocre. the plot- flimsy.
cheesy.
i gave up after 30 minutes.
Detective (2005)
real throwback to cheesy 70s cop movies
not a bad movie. just not a good one. it is tolerable, the kind of movie you will end up watching if you are sick in bed and can't find the remote. it's a "movie of the week" paced like a mini-series event scheduled during sweeps. Tom Berenger is good (as he always is) and Cybill Shepherd is, well, Cybill Shepherd. Annabeth Gish is totally wasted. She seems to actually be absent through most of her performance except for the occasional shrill outburst towards the end. You can't really blame the actors because the real flaw is the story line and script: back-to-back pointless and clichéd conversations that do nothing to move the plot along.
