Fortitude (2015)
A true suspense...Intriguing,horrifying,infuriating and rewarding.
Season one... Half way through the 1st season and I've changed my mind about this show twice now. The first couple episodes felt a bit contrived to me. Stick with it! The story is amazing, complicated and anything but boring as some early reviews suggested.
it became addicting. Many excellent actors, with performances that seem at times overly intense but secrets abound with these characters. There is a reason for everything. This is a complicated and interesting murder mystery and much more.
Nothing is as it seems. Don't draw conclusions, accept the ride because once past a couple episodes any real suspense fan will be addicted to the constantly increasing horror, suspense and reveals
Season two... The story continues to escalate and hold you. It does stay very intriguing, suspenseful and interesting. There is a problem with some things however. And I don't believe I'm being picking here. These are not reasons to stop watching,btw...
The greatest irritant for me was the fact that everyone is an anti hero. Nobody to like,no hero as it were. Maybe this is real life???
The relationships are extremely toxic and many contrived as are most of the scenes.
Ie...People,have pertinent revealing information as we do,as the series continues, however for really no good reason other than contriveing the suspense,it is held within. For the sake of spoilers I can't go into specifics, but many reviews I read agreed with this. The relationships are so troubled that there is really nothing and nobody to enjoy. And this is two seasons,we need someone to like and enjoy. This is lacking is nearly every sense. Even the love is obsessive and toxic. And in a town of 700 there is no family life, just an incredible amount of drinking, especially by those in charge. Again,...if if you enjoy suspense and intrigue I believe most will like this series a lot,it is done well. The acting filming, cinematography is all excellent. A worthwhile and entertaining journey I think many will find it to be. Just don't expect real 8's,9's and 10's...I give it a 6 overall and an 8 for suspense and being a mostly different and very intriguing story.
Season two...
I have seen several of these engrossing TV and streaming series from Europe. To say they do it well is grossly understated.
In addition the cinematography, scenery, majesty of the area is breathtaking and very well shot. And they are many. Highly recommended for those who love good suspense, mystery. and horror.
Note...Sorry to say this but some of the American audience might find some of the nudity gratuitous. But the Europeans have far less shame of something as simple ams innocmt as our own bodies,
This would have been a perfect opportunity for friendly discussions on the absent boards I use to love. But the trolls won, sadly. Maybe they were just an excuse???
Midnight, Texas (2017)
Not impressed with the pilot
I can only speak to the pilot as that is all that has aired at the time of this writing.
I don't much watch network fare. If you watch cable and premium offerings and then try to watch those offered by the networks, you wonder if the writing is flat because they are focused on a different, maybe younger and older,on both extremes or if they have a large number of TV watchers who don't get cable and premium and don't know the difference in quality??? We have a town full of mainly 20 something's who look like they spend all their time in the gym and in front of the mirror. The characters lack character, number one. I tried this because I like and am a fan of Supernatural from the CW. It is very good because the writing is excellent. The stories are clever and they don't take themselves seriously. It works. The acting is decent. Also from network TV I watch Elementary. Good acting, stories relatively clever.
Unfortunately,at least as far as this pilot was concerned none of what makes Supernatural worth watching is the case here. Acting was superficial. While the characters could be interesting they were, all of them contrived and lacked the kind of intrigue that might compel an audience to want to tune in again. Is this just for kids one wants to ask. Maybe???
The same ol fare with little flare. After watching and there are many these days on cable, from Orphan Black to Mr. Robot,Preacher,Dirk Gently,Broadchurch,Claws,Vikings,The Strain,Bates Motel,Killjoys,American Horror,Better Call Saul,Legion, which is amazing,Humans,Hap and Leonard,12 Monkeys,Walking Dead,Into the Badlands,Taboo, also amazing,The Expanse,Major Crimes,(pushing it a bit, lol)but I like it,...,Z Nation,Mercy Street,The Last Kingdom, and more the Networks need to do better than this.
Now if you only watch network fare then you would not know the difference....they say ignorance is bliss, not always,I'll admit, but in this instance ....And the Emmys are not reflective either of the real talent out there, save a few and the premiums which I omitted.
All this and I will give it 3 eps. I hope i can come back after and say,,oops, should have waited. This got really good. We'll see. Respectfully
Claws (2017)
This, that and a whole lotta other
Near perfect, very adult crime drama. This pilot spent not one minute BSing it's way to a surprising conclusion to set up what looks like a very rough ride of woman power. Previews made this look sassy, but it is much more. This looks like a sophisticated crime thriller.
Very well executed. Niece Nash (Scream)and Dean Noriis (Breaking Bad),along with Carrie Preston (True Blood) and others give difficult, really wonderful, believable performances with very adult material. I gave the pilot a 10.
The Life of David Gale (2003)
One of the most underrated films...ever
Disturbing, provocative, suspenseful, courageous and a plethora of other adjectives won't prepare you for this story. Whatever side of the issue you may be on,this movie will speak to you. Needless to say Kevin Spacey is remarkable as are Winslet and Linney.
Why is it so provocative? It reminds us of just how human we all are. Why so suspenseful? We never know for sure what is going on. Why so disturbing? The subject mattter, especially within the context of this story brings us to an understanding of our world many would like to ignore. Why so courageous? Watch!
Indignation (2016)
Thoughtful, angry look at a young Jewish man dealing with life at a Christian college in 1951
This is nearly a perfectly executed movie. The acting by all the main characters is excellent. It is pensive and slow, but not is a way that causes the viewer to be uninterested. In fact I watched several scenes, several times.
A young, very bright Jewish man receives a scholarship to a Christian college in 1951. He is openly atheist and angry he must endure chapel and thinking in general from others of a primitive thinking nature. But he is a buthcher's son and this is his chance to ve mich more, the world is at his fingertips. He,himself is young and naive, especially when it comes to women. However he meets a beautiful precocious women with some emotional problems and a reputation.
Never the less he is taken with her as she is with him. The story revolves around his relationship with her as well as the students and a especially an ingratiating forcefully conservative Dean played extremely well by Tracy Letts.
Many will find this too thoughtful, too pensive, too slow. It is simply not the kind of movie many usually see today. Certainly not like what most rush off to see at the theaters with 3D glasses, action, thrills and CGI. It simply isn't that kind of movie. This is what we use to call a film. This one is for the thinkers. Intelligent, disturbing, thoughtful. 4 stars.
