Mr. Corman (2021)
Mediocre White Man Sob Story
Wow, is this as "deep" as it gets for a middle aged white man going through an existential crisis? Let me break out my violins. Lol So he didn't have to overcome poverty, he didn't have to overcome abuse...he's just upset that he didn't get to be a rock star? I kept watching only in hopes that it would actually get interesting. It just kept feeling like you were on the "verge" of something, but it was just more of a pity party.
What a boring character that they try to make introspective. The only cool episode was the visions of what his life would look like if he chose different paths. There are other things that could make this more compelling- one of which is cultural diversity. His roommate has an entire episode and speaks a few Spanish words to the mother of his child, so I guess that's the extent of it.
That White People Shit (2019)
I guess I have no sense of humor
I watched the trailer for this and that was more than enough. I am Black. I've been accused of "acting white" or "wanting to be white" my entire life, so I fail to see the humor in this. Sure there are activities that are heavily associated with white people- like colonization and genocide. But I can't think of a single activitiy that a white American has done that a Black American has not. This narrative perpetuates harmful stereotypes and gatekeeping. It's also hard to tell whether it was intended for Black consumption or White consumption- either way, they're laughing AT us not WITH us. And white people are angry at this because they think it paints them in a negative light when really it just perpetuates this notion that white people have hobbies and fascinations that Black people don't have the capacity to understand and appreciate. As a scholar I'm very disappointed to see this in 2021.
