Sharper (2023)
Solid 8 for me - great twisty thriller
Don't understand all the weak low rating reviews here to be honest. It's was a solid 8 for me. We follow each main character is separate chunks of the film, showing alternating perspectives. Intrigue is developed at every twist and turn - to the point at which you sometimes wonder what on earth is going on (but that's what great about the great con game) and even though I saw the finale ending coming, I loved how it all came together. The final 30 seconds was my only disappointment - no spoilers here, but sadly for me I'd have preferred a different version.
Moore was excellent and this is a great Saturday night psychological thriller. Don't be put off by the negatives. I wasn't expecting so much, but thought it was fab.
Shining Girls (2022)
Don't understand the negative reviews!
I'm only on episode 3 but after reading the bizarrely negative reviews, which nearly put me off watching, I felt I needed to add a positive to encourage viewing. So far, it's a dark, gritty storyline (not for everyone admittedly, but totally fitting to its genre) - lots of shifting dark camera angles mixed with plenty of intrigue and great acting. I'm gripped!
Rules of the Game (2022)
Decent, in-depth drama
I very nearly didn't watch this because of the low score, but Maxine Peake is always in great things, so I decided to give it a go. It's very watchable, interesting even if not terribly likeable characters, and overall well done, with the exception of poor acting by the police detective.
On the Verge (2021)
Genius
This is wonderful ... genius writing. I do think it's rather niche, as is most comedy tbf, but it needs a particular audience I guess from the negative reviews. Personally, I love it.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Ignore the negative reviews...
I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, but my husband persuaded me to give it a go, and it was truly excellent. Such brilliantly drawn characters, black humour and incredible special effects. I loved the fact that the plot was actually really quite twisty and engaging for sci-fi. A great watch!
